Why so much LT1 Lust?

So it seems that just about everyone thinks its a tragedy that the new LT1 out of the C7 vette isn't available for the SS. I have to admit, I kinda got caught up in the mob but after reading up on it a bit I don't see what the big fuss is about.

So it employs an afm (dod) cam which enables half of the cylinders to shut down while cruising to conserve fuel. The L76 in the g8 gt utilizes this tech but it when looking for more hp with a bigger cam this feature is typically eliminated because a non-dod cam offers better gains. Also, when the dod kicks in and cylinders shut down it causes some ill harmonics (drone) in most aftermarket exhaust systems causing frustrations. Would this just be another feature that owners would want to disable anyway?

The new LT1 also uses direct injection. DI has been around for awhile, but it seems like it still has some bugs to work out. The first thing, specifically, that comes to my mind is the issues Audi had/has with the RS4 and carbon build up. A couple local guys had major issues with carbon build-up which they had to have cleaned up which wasn't a cheap task. I think originally they had to foot the bill, but maybe Audi reimbursed them once they realized it was widespread but there still isn't a solution so now it become regular maintenance item.

Finally, with being a new engine platform, tune happy LT1 owners will have to be patient with modding their engines until vendors sort things out and develop software/parts. Tuners are already talking about the challenges the LT1 tech poses.

So I get that it's the latest and greatest but is it something we're really gonna miss having in our SS's? Even if it was available it would most certainly be a de-tuned version from the 450 hp vette engine as to not step on their toes. Maybe in a few years into production it'll make sense but the LS3 seems to be a good alternative. For now anyway. (That's assuming the LSA wouldn't be available. Cause I'd take that)

If you have to ask why not getting the new LT1 is a major disappointment, you need to stop posting on car forums.

Maybe you should put down your "Orah's book of the week" and educate yourself on direct injection and variable valve timing.

I am embarrassed to count myself among the membership here after threads like this.
GM:
Please announce the MSRP for the SS Sedan so I can stop visiting this site looking for it.
I feel my "Car IQ" dropping with every visit.

Well, here's a perfect opportunity for you to enlighten us, or at least me. It's meant to be a discussion.

And please don't waste this opportunity with your usual "I'm not wasting keystrokes..." like you do in every other thread when you don't really know what you're talking about. Dig deep and try to contribute positively.

I've been saying this after my initial disappointment on not getting the LT1 in the SS. As cool as it would be to have the new shiny engine, I'm actually ok with the LS3.

When I get bored with the stock engine it's an easy $6 to $10K for a Maggie Super Charger, Corsa pipes, and a 8 to 10 psi boost tune to add 125 to 150 HP/TQ. And still have a full warranty!

I bought the BMW 335i the first year they made them. My wife and I did European delivery the month after they started producing them. It was almost a full year before the tuners had the ECM cracked and stable enough that I felt comfortable adding an ECM tune. Forget aftermarket stuff suspension and exhaust. That was almost 2 years. People had them before then but they were almost all custom and you had no idea what you were getting and if there were problems with them.

Most US aftermarket manufactures will just look and see what the Aussies' have in aftermarket for Holdens and make that. The benifit of using an existing platform, engine and drivetrain.

Let the Corvette folks figure out the LT1 and in a couple of years if/when they start putting the LT1 in an SS then maybe it will be time to trade in.

I'm was a bit disappointed in the LT1 not being offered at first, but quickly got over it. The SS will be existing technology so I think the first year jitters of a vehicle should be put to rest. The LT1 in the Vette is estimated to have 450hp/450tq while the SS LS3 is also "estimated" (per the Chevy website) to have 415hp/415tq, which is not that much of a difference. With that in mind, I think that number will change for the better before the release of the SS. With limited numbers of the SS and the new Vette and Camaro on the horizon, I personally don't see the LT1 coming to the SS. I'm cool with that because as stated in earlier posts, the aftermarket for the LS3 is plentiful while the LT1 will need time to be "cracked" by the tuners. I'm sure the SS design has, or should have paid for itself, so I don't think GM will lose big money on the venture if any, no matter how they price it.

GM will be happy. They were counting on you being a reluctant participant in your anal raping. So, before you bend over and drop your pants, remove your wallet and hand it over to GM.

But, don't pull those pants up or put that wallet away, because just when you think it's over, GM will be tapping you on the shoulder with the LT1 and TR6060 in order to repeat the entire process again.

But, you are used to being raped by car manufacturers, and secretly like it, I'm sure.
Why else would you buy a Mustang from Ford with a SOLID REAR AXLE in the 21st Century.

Now, let GM hear you squeal like a pig, boy.

The lt1 is new technology for v8's who wants to stop and start at red lights and make 6 cyl sounds. I had a 2011 Camaro hated the way it shifted and the drop to 6 or 4 cyl whatever mode my 2013 is better but not perfect give the lt1 a few years to develop.

All very good points.

If the LT1's coding can't be 'broke' then aftermarket tuning will be a non existant until it is cracked. Think Dodge Charger/Challenger here (although it's been recently 'broke' into).

And the DoD drone is horrible in the GT's. If the SS gets that then you will see some very unhappy owners.

And yes, the LS3 is an awesome motor w/great potential and aftermarket success.
