Lift point information

The question of proper lifting of the car (with a 4-point lift) came up in the Deflector Panel discussion

I have 3 pages of Factory Service text and illustrations that I can scan and e-mail to anyone who may wish to have it. It's mostly generic in nature, but the lift points are at least pointed out, and there are several specific "do not" instructions to be aware of. PM or e-mail me with your e-mail and I'll get this info sent ASAP.

(I don't know how to scan a page and then post it to a topic thread)

Easy...

Scan the 3 pages and save as JPG of JPEG where you can find them easy on your computer.

Reply to post like you always do.

Click the little paperclip to the right of the smiley face and a box asking you to choose file(s) pops up. click choose file and find page 1 highlight(select) it and click choose (or OK or whatever I have a MAC).

Do it again for page 2 and again for page 3.

then just submit as usual.

easy!

And a big thanks in advance; I got a lot of specialized resources I can still get into but I can't get into the easy stuff like parts and service anymore go figure.

GM service info - lifting points for SS

The image of the undercar - 3rd page - is with bottom of the image being the front of the vehicle This is the same image as shown on 1st page, rotated and enlarged.

On 2nd page, two words are obscured in the scan:
- in the Front Hoist Pad text, the word "or" is missing.
- in the Rear Hoist Pad text, the word "side" is clipped.

Depends to a certain extent on your jack and jack stands.

My jack stands have a broad, flat surface and my jack has the standard stamped steel "cup" with a hockey puck in it to pad whatever part of the car I'm lifting. It's more secure with my setup to jack at the pinch welds (being VERY sure that I don't contact the nearby plastic rocker trim) and place the jack stands at the lift points.

If I don't have to remove the wheels, like when doing an oil change, I'll lift the car, then place the wheels on ramps. I have to place them backwards, but that's not an issue as I'm not going to drive the car off them anyway.

YMMV depending on your particular equipment.

I did a brake job on my SS the other day... I jacked it up with my 3 ton floor Jack, on the pinch weld, placed Jack stands under the car, some where, I don't remember, it was a similar spot I would position the lift arms on my lift and proceed to work. After I was done I looked everything over and there was no damage. I'm trying to figure out why this is such a big deal?

Some actual photos would be more helpful.
I got mine on my 2 post lift for the first time. The the service manual pics Navy Lifer posted seem to indicate the proper 2 post lift points are on the unibody inboard of each pinch weld lift point. I couldn't get my lift pads to rest on those points without the lift arm pressing against the rocker panels. With my shortest lift pad extensions, I could not get the pads under the lift points (which are about 3/4" lower than the pinch points. I had to use the pinch weld lift points. Not ideal but I'd bet lots of lifts run into this issue. Maybe next time I'll get 4 pinch weld jack adapters... if they fit properly in my lift arms.

Don't know if anyone is still watching this thread, but when I installed my winter wheels this year, I put the front jack pad just slightly in the wrong place, and it slightly buckled the plastic rocker cover (I know, dumb mistake, but recent back surgery made it hard to get down and get a proper look. That'll teach me). I put it down quick enough to avoid damage, but the movement of the rocker broke a couple of the white plastic clips that attach the rocker cover. I wasn't too worried, but now the thing rattles over bumps and its driving me crazy. Does anyone have a way to find the part number for those clips? Finding part numbers at my local dealer is a painful process. They don't really know what the car is...

Thanks for the great pics and scanned pages btw...
