I didn't think it was quite that negative...
Although I will agree that the author does not like the steering...

"And yet for $45,000, with only two options (a sunroof for $900 and a spare tire for $500), you’re getting a competitive ride that undercuts the likes of a similarly powered BMW 550i. It also handily outpaces its American competitors, the bland Ford Taurus SHO and angry but less capable Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Dodge Charger."

I haven't driven a high end car with EPAS so can't comment on how those units feel. The EPAS in the SS is fine for even most enthusiasts wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The average guy or gal on the street wouldn't have a clue what EPAS is let alone hydraulic setups :D
It is the absolute diehards that will know

I can feel the difference between my 2010 Camaro without EPAS and my 2012 ZL1 with EPAS. The feel is day and night different to me. The 2010 the steering input feels the same no matter if your doing 30mph or 100mph. The 2012 you can feel the change of the steering input as your speed increases, just under Tour or Sport mode. (PTM mode 5) is an entire different animal, programed for track use.

I like it a lot, and it also helps keep the car stable with the staggered wheel setup.

meanwhile this review couldn't seem more glowing regarding the EPAS
The suspension is comprised of a MacPherson strut front and multi-link independent rear suspension. The steering (as on virtually every new car) is electronic power assist and frankly, it’s outstanding. We attacked the mountain roads outside Palm Springs, California, and the steering feel was the perfect complement to an amazingly well sorted suspension.

This is the first review of the electric power steering that was in any way negative and this one gives it a schelacking!!! :{ WTF???
I'm wondering if he knew about the competitive mode setting for the car, that adds more feedback and effort to the wheel.

From how he describes the steering I think he had it just in the normal mode (default), designed for when you are driving around town or want a relaxing drive.

What competitive mode setting?
Press the TCS button to turn off the TCS then press again within 5 seconds to activate competative drive mode. This keeps the stability control active but makes it less sensative allowing you to push envelope further before it starts cutting power to keep you from losing control. Press TCS and hold for 5+ seconds and you can completely turn off TCS and Stability Control allowing you to do whatever your hear desires.
