Has anyone replaced the front ( mid) muffler with an x pipe on the standard exhaust ? Id be interested to know what you thought of the sound. Thought it might be a cheap first option to get a bit of v8 sound.

I changed out the Stock H-pipe on my 2006 Vette to a X-pipe.

The sound changed but barely. The upgrade is better flow.

You won't get more sound unless its a Off-Road X (no CATS), but I have yet to see how the SS has the exhaust setup. Not sure if you can do just the Off Road X or have to do headers as well. Which is what I would do anyways. I always make it loud and then go under the hood.

If you want more sound and not a lot of cost then Electric Cut-outs are always a fun option.

You might check out G8board as it has been done numerous times on there and from the underside picture i've seen of the SS, it appears the SS and GXP have very similar exhaust.
