What choices do you have to protect the area behind the rear wheel? Moreover, trust me those tires are going to sand ballast the paint behind the rear wheel. So what do we do to protect the paint? Mud flaps. Clear 3M film? What? Well I think mud flaps belong on trucks, the SS is anything but a truck. 3M film is expensive and has been reported to turn yellow after time. So what can we do? 3M Paint Defender spray film! What? http://3mauto.com/products/paint-defender I have used it on the tops of my hard saddlebags on my BMW motorcycle and it works. YOU MUST FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER. In addition, you must put it on thick. I tried it twice on a piece of scrap metal first. The first try I did not put it on very thick and it was a bitch to get off. The second try I loaded it up and it came off like peeling the backing off of a decal. I do not know how it will last for the long run but the tops of my motorcycle bags look good despite me dragging my boots across them when I get off the bike. Therefore, if you hate mud flaps (like I do) and you are not sure of the 3M film (and cost) try the Paint Defender, because those tires are going to blast the paint right off the lower portion of the rear fender. One more thing. If you put it on right it will look like you put it on with a roller (orange peel for you painters) but it does flow out to a smooth shiny surface as it dries. It is on the picture I have included with where I taped it off. I bought it at Advance Auto parts. No I do not work for 3M, I just like to protect my toys.

I've got the splash guards on my PBM. From a looks perspective, they blend real good with the black. If I was running any color but black, I'd probably go this route.

I think those areas directly behind a wheel are deserving of some serious protection. It seems everything automotive is a trade-off. Styling for protection, power for economy, high perf power for low end drivability and so on...
