Apr 26-27, 2014 – SPRING RUMBLE
Summit Point Raceway (2.0mi main circuit)

Spring is approaching. Getting ready for the SS's first of four track events I am participating in this year. Dose anybody have any recommendations on race pads for us?

As far as preparing the car for the abuse, what else should be checked / changed? high temp brake fluid? pads? flush coolant before or after? Just did my second oil change at 3,000 miles.

Pad's:

Fluid:

It seems just changing the pads and fluid would be okay. After talking to a few knowledgeable tech's and installation of pads and brake fluid, it seems the trans temp would be the only concern, good opportunity to find out if the front mount trans cooler can keep up. 4 sessions each day. XX laps.

GoPro footage incoming late April.

Jstue, for it's first event pads and fluid is all I'd do then monitor from there. Regarding your examples above...

Motul RBF600 is very good racing fluid and can be mixed with std brake fluid without issue. I wouldn't keep it in more then a few months because it absorbs water faster than most of the other. I run ATE because I'm too lazy to keep changing it and it's been great for DD'ing and track days. Then again my car weighs about 500# less.

Regarding pads, this is somewhat subjective all I can really add is that once you find a pad that you like for street driving see if they offer a pad for track use by the same manufacturer. I use Carbotech Bobcats on the street and XP12's on track. They wil have similar base compounds so no need to "bed-in" the pads again after you switch. Just put them on and go.

Do not use Hawk HPS pads!!! I learned this the hard way during a track day at VIR with my G8. The attached pics show the damage caused from material transfer with less than 20 minutes on track. The corner workers told me that that they saw flames shoot out each time I went into turn 1. I have since learned quite a lot regarding brake performance with large heavy cars in Lemons and Chump racing .

Just called hawk for 2014 SS brake pad info (non HPS), after about 1 minute of radio silence. "Hm. SS? Looks like we haven’t received an SS yet in our R&D department to figure this out." damnit... Calling back with part numbers for front and rear pads, minus year, make and model. Blah.

For pads, consider Carbotech

Some useful info here, too - Zeckhausen Racing
G8 GXP data--same components - pads & rotors - as for SS

Also, take a look at this: Quantam Brake Cooling Kits

Quite a few good tips on the G8 boards to research regarding track prep.

One suggestion I strongly encourage you consider is to get a separate set of front (or both F/R) track-only rotors. A nearly 2-ton car with aggressive pads is going to be pretty hard on rotors anyway, so you may find that your original rotors would be junk after one weekend.

Plan ahead!

Very good info, I'll have to peep the G8 boards. I called Cabotech but just missed them for the day. I'll try again Monday. Track set of rotors. Good thinking...

I used to club race an E30 BMW 3-series and I used Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads with Ate Super Blue racing fluid. Never, ever had a braking issue (though it's a much lighter car than the SS). I don't know if they have anything yet for the SS. Also might want to check what the Aussies are using for the VF.

Carbotechs are the way to go. We had great success with them in Lemons on our Giant S500 at Summit Point Raceway with 2+ hour stints, much longer than any HPDE run. Give them a call and explain what you want to do and they will hook you up. Keep in mind that something is usually going to win, the rotors or the pads. I agree that you should get separate rotors/pads for track use. We have have had good success with Frozen rotors both on the big Merc, and also on the Audi V8 quattro we are now racing.

I would recommend you NOT run OEM.

Carbotechs:10:
Definitely do all the fluids. Track inspections usually require it. ATE is great stuff. Could do stainless brake lines if you can find some.

Check section 9-5 of your owners manual, "Track Events and Competitive Driving", turn the page after the warranty warning. It speaks to the engine oil, changing to a hi-temp brake fluid, and changing the rear axle fluid after 24 hours, and for extended track adding a rear differential cooler.
