OK. I've mentioned this in another thread but wanted to get opinions. I have a tentative green light to buy an SS. But wife doesn't want 3 cars.

Going to get rid of the Nissan Armada, but I need to tow a jet ski with the SS or sell the Jet Ski. I don't really want to sell it.

I know the Aussies tow even bigger stuff with their Holdens but it seems Chevy wants you to buy a truck.

Think it will be ok to tow?

What equipment do I need to buy/install?

GM did not assign a tow rating to the SS. That means that if you get in a accident and the insurance company can in any way blame on the towing they will not pay.

That said, the Commodore VF has a tow rating of 2000 kg! That's 4400 lbs! So the car should have no problems what so ever. I used my G8 to tow my Harley bagger to Sturgis (about 1500 lbs between bike and trailer), 70 mph the entire way with no issues.

You can just barely see the G8.

Think a hitch for the G8 would fit an SS? Wiring harness?

The hitch is a definite maybe. It attaches to vehicle frame and I don't think that changed. I don't know if anything would be in the way though. Like exhaust or something. On my G8 they had to lower the exhaust to install 2 of the bolts.

The wiring harness should be semi generic though. All of the lights (wiring points) did not change locations, so it probably should work.

Sorry, but that is the best answer I can give...

A tow hitch will also void the warranty on powertrain, brake system and all towing related components!

Hmm... void the warranty if I take it in with a hitch on it.

Holden does make a tow kit for the VF.

Only issue I saw with the hitch is that it disables the rear sensors when it's attached to a trailer and some people didn't like that.

Having a truck that doesn't disable the sensors with a trailer attached, I can say that it's not a bad feature, since mine beeps at me when backing up, unless I manually turn it off.

If you think about it the take rate on a GM Accessory trailer hitch will fall into the <2% range for the SS. 3000 units x 2% = 60. Does this make business sense ... NO.

Trailering even light stuff puts a greater strain on the powertrain and brakes and increases warranty costs. Again given the small volume and low profit on the SS program the potential extra warranty cost even for just a handful of claims isn't there.

Trailering with the NASCAR Performance Sedan ... doesn't fit in with the marketing at all.

I don't believe it's a grand conspiracy to get more truck sales; it's just marketing and beancounters making business decisions.

Hi guys. I tow my 2013 Sea Doo GTX215 with my VF SSV Redline and I have a genuine Holden towbar kit fitted. I have no issues at all and I've never had a single problem. I'm sure it's made by Hayman Reece though. When I'm not using it I remove the tongue from it and cover it with a cover plate.
This was a $500 option from memory when I purchased mine very late October 2013.

This the Holden product I have installed

If you check out Hayman Reece International I'm sure they would make a kit for it and you should be able to purchase it in your neck of the woods

This is what it looks like

This is exactly what you require

If you would like me to post up some photos of mine just let me know :)

This specific towing question came up quite a while back so I got clarification from Customer Care.
The basic answer is no the SS isn't rated to tow. In saying that I was told due to it being shared with the VF there is no reason why you can't and to be mindful of voiding powertrain warranty if fitted as it hasn't been validated on Chevies books so to say.

As RCBVFSSVR above says the VF/SS can handle the job with out a doubt, I've seen guys tow Commodores on car trailers with no issue.

I guess it depends how much you like your warranty at the end of the day

Thanks for all the replies!

So, just remove hitch before service!
