In this month's Road and Track magazine the top speed of the SS is listed as 175 mph. I've now heard 155, 162 and 175. How many top speed numbers does Chevrolet put out?
Did it shut down like hitting a programmed limit or did it feel like that's all it had?My HUD gave 159 as the limit while the speedo was showing 160. That was on the slight downslope of the run. On the upslope it was 159/159.
My guess is the limit is actually 159 as the HUD said, but aero and terrain will allow a bit more under the right conditions like Trey experienced.
It just stopped gaining speed. Not violent at all, just held that speed, and not at engine redline, so wasn't the rev limiter. Based on rpm, I calculate the top speed (in 5th gear) to be in the 170-175 range if the speed limiter weren't present.Did it shut down like hitting a programmed limit or did it feel like that's all it had?
The car is "speed limited" not drag limited. With the right tune and the limiter turned off you might need the 180. War Baby, Whipple SS, Wkeylich, Headrat and others would need the dic or HUD, the analog needle would be pointed at their, uh. Feet.So why did they tease us with a 180mph analog speedo?!?!?!
Keep in mind that the tire diameter gets larger as speed increases. Centrifugal force, ya know.Interesting find when reading up on the number of revolutions tires of the same size will turn per mile.
What I'm seeing for the stock rears:
Potenza S-04 784 rev-per-mile
Cont ExtremeContact DW 761 rev-per-mile
Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT 787 rev-per-mile
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 783 rev-per-mile
My guess is the Conti's are going to get you a higher top end...

At 160 those tires must barely fit in the wheel wells then......:biggrin:Keep in mind that the tire diameter gets larger as speed increases. Centrifugal force, ya know.
That's precisely how they (wheel wells) are designed. Car wheel openings, wheel wells, and liners are generally designed to clear a tire envelope that is calculated from "max growth" of the tire (due to speed and temperature). As well as suspension movement and steering angles. At 160 those tires must barely fit in the wheel wells then......

Mine was at redline both times...the 158mph previous and now the 164mphIt just stopped gaining speed. Not violent at all, just held that speed, and not at engine redline, so wasn't the rev limiter.
