The SS finally started to arrive at dealerships on Long Island this weekend and I got a chance to look at one on sunday. I pulled up and saw a silver SS sitting outside still mostly covered in plastic and then I looked inside the showroom and saw a white SS sitting there. My first thoughts when looking at the car is that it looks a lot like a Malibu. The outside also has way too much chrome for my liking (I would definitely swap to some gloss black parts that come on the Commodore). I also thought the exhaust tips look funny only having one on each side when the opening is quite large. The interior of this car is where it really shines. I absolutely loved the seats, the suede touches and the overall layout of the interior. I asked the dealership what the deal with test driving one was and they told me that they only will let someone drive it once they work out numbers and sign the paperwork subject to test driving the car. I have mixed feeling about that but I figure those "guidelines" won't last too long once they start getting more cars in. However I also wouldn't want to buy a car with 200 test drive miles on it either, so I do understand where they are coming from. Either way I have test drove a brand new CTS-V at this dealership in the past so it's only a matter of time until they allow test drives on the SS.

Bottom line is, I really do like the interior on the car but the outside is a little bland for my taste (and thats coming from someone that owned 4 04-06 GTO's). Looking at it from the outside I almost feel like I would be spending $47k on a Malibu. From the inside though I feel like I would be spending $47k on a car that is in line with some $60k cars.

I'm still undecided on what to do. I am looking to trade my 2013 Corvette GS in on something more useful since my Vette just sits. I'm looking for something thats more comfortable/luxury but still sporty. I think this weekend I am going to look at some SRT8's and what ever else I can think of thats in the 45-55k price range. I know of a few other dealerships around here with the SS in stock so maybe I can persuade one to let me drive it.

My wife and I had the same thoughts once we finally layed eyes on one. I took her to the dealer to sell her on trading the G8 for the SS. Her comments were almost the same as yours as far as the chrome. Stepping out of the G8 and looking at the SS, we both wished it was more aggressive or had more attitude. The interior was really nice, but I was turned off by the gloss black pieces that would no doubt be covered in fingerprints. The performance is there, but we just wished it had more pop.

The reason why I like the looks so much is because it does not have all the in your face look at me i'm so fast gilt and flash.

Blending in as a 'bu or whatever look a like at red lights and leaving them in a smoke screen ... well gotta keep that to a minimum tires are expensive.

The innocuous sleeper look combined with just about never seeing another one in the extended neighborhood is just my cup of tea!

Yep, I can't wait to make some fools in BMers and Audis think they got smoked by a Malibu.

Riding in it feels like a luxury car, handles like a small car, performance better than advertised, what's not to like?

You know what looks fast? Late generation Celicas.

You know what drives like crap and is slow? Late generation Celicas.

This is the anti-Celica.

If you line up with me in your SS, you'll be upset thinking that you just got smoked by a G6 - LOL

This is the same talk that was around when the GTO arrived, and look what a great car that was. I think that it is great that it has the sleeper look. So what, it looks like a Malibu...it's a Chevy. BMW's look like BMW's, Audi's look like Audi's, Caddie's look like Caddie's, why can't Chevys look like Chevy's???

Sometimes, I just don't get it.

The GTO looked as though it was from 1996...yes, a good driving car (I had one) indeed but the styling was dated and not visually pleasing. Some folks feel the SS is rental car bland and I agree. I'm not going to buy an SS (would rather pick up a used CTS-V) but I think you should ;)

Am I the only one that actually likes the look of the Malibu??? I think they did a great job on it. To me, the SS just looks like its big brother.

Neither do I....

And as a side note one of my neighbors has a 2006 Spice Red Metallic like new stock manual GTO that he takes out when the weathers nice. He is the original owner and it attracts tons of attention, way more now than it ever did when it was new. The kiddies want to know what it is and the more sophisticated just appreciate it and the care it gets.

Some folks feel that the CTS-V is not handsome and classy car (like the SS and BMW's) and I agree with this. Have fun with your CTS-V though, im sure its just the differences in tastesn.

Here's been my experience in owning the SS so far. Keep in mind I was in the market for either an Audi S4, BMW335i, CLA45amg, etc.

So several people when looking at it from the side have said, "is that a BMW?" others have said "is that a MB?" and yet others have said "an SS what? an SS impala?"
I grin a little and say "no, it's just an SS"

Pulled up to a stop and a nice looking 370Z is next to me, looks at my car like "family car, pff" I rev a little... I GO... next thing you know, in my REARVIEW mirror I see the little engine that couldn't. I'm sure because of me, he won't ever race Malibus, Impalas or many Chevy's again.

Then on a separate occasion, I'm driving around 45mph, I see a BMW (5 series of some sort), tailgating me and just chasing me through traffic. We finally get 2 open lanes, I let him catch up next to me and after that I GO... I must have left him very disappointed. He REALLY wanted to pass me..
Lastly, I'm sitting at a red light getting ready to turn, and a guy in a late model MB (350 I think) in the next lane does a double take on my car and stops just short of my bumper... he is staring really hard at the back of my car trying to figure out what the heck car I have. He wasn't even looking at the traffic light, just my car. He's eyeballing it kinda like when you check a girl out, and the expression on his face said it all "I need to trade in my MB and get one of these"

All good experiences, and that last one is priceless. Never occurred to me this car is af it was "pre-debadged" by GM.

I actually think that the SS design is more along the lines of MB and BMW. Its no wonder that the GTO, G8, SS have a lot of conquest buys.

Thank you, I plan on it.

As you can see by my sig, I had an STS-V and we loved it. I considered a used CTS-V myself, but decent ones (certified) are still over 50K, plus I would rather have a normally aspirated car this time.

I think it's a bit delusional to think you've got everyone covered in the stop light grand prix. Maybe in 2005, but you guys will have a hard time showing a v-6 mustang your tail lights on a public road today. Reuss totally oversold and under delivered on this car and the OTD price really seals it for me. Hopefully a genuine GXP replacement is around the corner and can sway me back to the Holden family as they build the best road cars in the world.
