If I buy the solo axle back which mates to the stock exhaust and just replaces the stock bi-modal mufflers then if I upgrade to long headers and hi-flow cats the Solos will bolt right up to the mid-pipe... correct?

Yup, bolts right up, and as mentioned, it's LOUD. I was attracting cops like bugs to a porch light.

If you've already got the Kooks, you can just disconnect the stock mufflers and let them hang for a bit while you try out the sound since no mufflers is quite close to the volume of the Solos. I'm running a Magnaflow mid-muffler now to quiet it down as it just wasn't streetable for the way I like to drive.

I don't have the headers, but I added baffles to my Solo 3" to tone it down a bit. It still shrieks and sounds like NASCAR stocker when I nail it in a closed space, but it's much easer to live with toodling around town.

I would highly recommend NOT doing Solo axleback J pipes to headers. It is ridiculously loud. I know we all have a different preference and comfort level with exhaust levels, I get it. But the thing is, if loud exhaust doesn't sound good...then what is the point? Do you want to give a bad singer a microphone? No, of course not. Additionally, if you live any sort of populated area you are going to make enemies with your neighborhood the first time you start your car. Seriously, this combo will rattle your windows and doors and is not worth it. No one will want to ride in your car and if they do, forget having a conversation or even listening to the radio and forget phone conversations. People will make fun of you if you do this.

I immediately sold my Solo's after installing headers (without cats) due to the volume. JMHO

Edit: maybe it is tolerable with cats in place...but I doubt it makes too much of a difference

Great comparison and thanks. The OEM mufflers will stay if that is what removes the drone.
You can always add on muffs later. Not sure what year you have, but the bi-mod muffs pair great with headers as you can choose your own adventure on the fly!

I have 1-7/8" ARH longtubes and high flow cats to Solo axleback. Nothing rattles, zero drone, quiet as stock at cruising speed on the interstate. Put the factory mufflers back on to check the difference after the cam and long tube install, Solo was deeper, less "tinny" and sounds much better to both myself and my wife. It is beastly sounding at WOT to be sure, but that doesn't happen in the city, and certainly not in my neighborhood.

Interesting. I guess cats really tame it down. I ran them catless and it was insane.

Well... if there was one thing that the Chevy SS needed it was a louder exhaust. I have a Ford station wagon that I added a 351W V8 and a manual transmission to, and it's nothing until you start it up and the Flowmasters start rumbling. That is the effect that I was looking for from the SS. The Solos did that. It is louder and deeper than the stock bimodals in performance mode. It's exactly what I was looking for. The volume gap is proportional to the rpms. The more you're in it the greater the volume difference between Solos and stock. It's fantastic. I didn't take any pics ir vids yet but I will try this Spring.

Well. It turns out I am probably getting ARH to Solos. I hesitate to say why. Someone else's insurance is replacing the Solo axlebacks that I had on there and the rest of the exhaust system with ARH. Not sure how to feel about it.

A follow up to post #19, found a video from last summer and just dropped it on YouTube for you. (y)
