Just got my new SS this Saturday. They are going fast.. None of the dealerships I left my info with called me back - just stumbled onto the last one.

At any rate, I opened the manual, saw the comment about "competition mode" and not to engage in it unless you are on a closed race track.

I immediately entered competition mode, and all I can say is...

I love this mode. A quick double tap of the button and you are in it.

Well, based on some limited experience (I haven't hit 100 miles on the odometer yet)

- It tones down Traction Control and maintains stabilitrak.

In other words, acceleration seems potentiated, when I gun it in "normal" mode the traction control is working almost the whole time, applying the brakes and keeping acceleration on a leash. Stabilitrak selectively applies braking to individual wheels to keep you from going sideways, but in performance mode you still need to wrangle the wheel to maintain a straight line.

I'm not positive, but it seems in performance mode, the engine gets "taken off the leash" a bit as well, so if you can keep it straight you get dramatically improved acceleration.

The language in the manual seems to imply engine output improvements when in performance mode, I might be reading between the lines too much, but it certainly seemed that way on the road.

TLDR version - in performance mode you can go faster in a straight line, provided you can keep the SS going straight.

I know in some Stability Control Systems, it addition to controlling braking, it can also cut engine power. Don't know about the SS but I wouldn't be surprised. So if both stability control and traction control are disengaged, you get full power with no braking.

It allows wheel spin but will try and keep you from going off the road. Layman terms it can't over come physics though. Instead of dialing back power to prevent wheel spin it allows some but if you go side ways to much stabilitrak kicks in to straight car up. Oh never ever turn the system off my buddy in his Zr1 did but won't say how bad but time in body shop. Guy turned his off on z06 at drag strip and smacked a wall.

FYI, I have an SS on the way, but my current daily driver is a 2009 Cobal SS/TC. It has competition mode you access with a click, but you have to hold the competition mode button for about 4 seconds to completely remove all the nannies, which I didn't actually know for about 2 years after I bought it. So, essentially you have 3 different levels of assistance.

I wonder if the SS is similar.

Took a look at Ride Control Systems in the Owner Manual, under Driving and Operating at 9-30.

One press of the TCS/StabiliTrak button, on center console, disables TCS (Traction Control System).

Quickly pressing the button twice selects Competitive Driving Mode. "Competitive Driving Mode controls engine power while the StabiliTrak system helps maintain directional control of the vehicle by selective brake application. In this mode, TCS is optimized. Adjust your driving style to account for the available engine power."

"To turn off both TCS and StabiliTrak press and hold the TCS/StabiliTrak button until the traction off light and StabiliTrak OFF light come on and stay on in the instrument cluster."

When in above modes, pressing & releasing the TCS/StabiliTrak button will restore TCS & StabiliTrak.

Agree with z51vett about being very careful turning off all the nannies.

My ZL1 is the same way, at 650hp even when everything is on and you go WOT from a 45mph roll the back end steps out and the back tires start roasting. It's a lot of fun, but get expensive after a while on tires ... :)

It definitely alleviates some of the torque management settings that's in the factory tune. If you're brave enough, find a good tuner in the area and tune all that out of the computer for good! (this will void your 5/yr100K powertrain)
