The Durban Highway is in port in Japan at about 2:50 PM PDT (west coast US). That is when I received the e-mail notice. I will try tomorrow to get the next port and ETA. I will track the Kentucky Highway also. We know it will take about half the voyage just to clear Australia.

The Durban Highway has left the port at Harima, Japan. It appears to be heading east to another possible port stop in Japan. The call sign for the port is 'JP IRK'. The JP obviously is for Japan, but I cannot find out currently what the other port abbreviation stands for. HOWEVER, the ship is supposed to be there 9-30-13, tomorrow. Then I will be notified by e-mail that it is in fact at a port. And so on. At least the ship is heading the right direction so far.
The Kentucky Highway is rounding the lower horn of Australia heading almost northerly towards Japan. This ship is about 65 feet shorter than the Durban and much older. 2011 vs. 1986. She needs some amplified LS power!! Maybe a "Maggie"??

Found a web site that has port codes. 'IRK' is code for 'Irago, Japan". This is a geographical area on the Atsumi Peninsula. It is called Cape Irago. Then inland, the harbor is medium sized. This port is only about 250Km EAST by the way a crow flies(straight line) from Osaka (Harima). By ship this is three times the distance. Maybe this is only a fuel and replenishment stop. Too short a distance to load or unload cars. Oh, yeah, when all this happy stuff calms down and we see the cars headin' towards us, there will be a geography test administered !!! LOL. Boy am I learnin'!!

hahaha a lot to learn all for just something that happens once in a while for some of us. but it's better than not knowing it and not being able to find out anything until you get that call from the dealer.

It's going to be even better when we find out when the ships are coming in and have picture proof that the cars are here and we go to the dealer and say "Now whatcha going to say??" No denying the facts!!! I was told by the general manager at my dealer that "those message boards are all speculation". Then how come we seem to know more about the SS than they do?? And we are the ones that are willing to drop north of 50 large into their bank accounts!! Yep, "Now whatcha going to say??"

The Durban Highway is now tied up at the docks at Nagoya Japan. Viewing this dock from the satelite it appears that this is indeed a "car loading" area. Maybe she is really, really gettin filled up. The K-Line website said that some of these ships can carry 4500 cars and have decks in them that can be raised or lowered to accomodate the vehicles. K-Line also said that they are building car carriers that can carry up to 7500 cars. I recently discovered that a buddy of mine used to unload the cars at Benicia. The drivers would be transported by the BUS LOADS into the ship to drive them out. Each car is tied down with four straps. The stevedores unlatch them. Then they start round robin all day and all night!!

You got it!!!! I remember Sasebo Japan in the 1960's. Yep, I do remember!!
I had something similar being stationed about 60 miles south of Paris between 1960 and 1963.:smiley_flag:

I found something that said a ship of the approx size of the Durban Highway could hold 3 to 5,000 cars.

Does this mean the SS's come off last since they went on first??????????

Quite possibly that is the case. I guess it depends on where they were stored. I know nothing about ships but would assume they would have been stored on the lower decks to keep balance and centre of gravity low, especcially if the ship was empty.

Just an uneducated guess though.

This "loading order" has me concerned about the unloading!! Which cars will come off first??? I think Commodoreman is on to something with the SS's being the first loaded and kept low in the ship for stability. My concern is when should I show up at the port area??? Right after docking or wait a few hours?? It took over 30 hours to load and will probably take less to unload because they will be unlatching the four straps on each car rather than having to connect and cinch up each strap. By the way, my buddy and I are going to the Port of Benicia this morning to get good vantage points and do some practice pictures.

Now then, back to tracking--------The Durban Highway has left Nagoya, Japan and is going to an unidentifiable port or whatever simply I.D.'d as JP 005. Wherever it is, it is in Japan and the ship is heading BACK in the direction of Osaka. And it is due there on 10-2 at about 1300hrs.(1:00PM) I will keep all informed. I am waiting for the port US BNC to come up!!! That one will be the jackpot!!

Negative... used to be a part of this @ GM back in the 90's. In fact Benicia is a port I know well and have stood on that loading unloading area watching cars mostly load! So, each deck, and there are many, typically has the ability to load and unload independently of the others. There a lot of flexibility onboard those vessels. I'm still hoping to get reliable info from GM and from the Port operators but naturally this stuff is confidential inside of GM and many of my old contacts at the Port have long since retired...:tongue4:

We just got back from a very, very fruitful and informative trip to the Port of Benicia. Found excellent vantage points on our own AND were suggested to and recommended by where to best view the cars AND where they are to be stored. Yes we will get some shots of the ship. But we will be able to stand on the roadway as the cars come "roaring" by on their way to the AMPORTS headquarters parking area up the hill away from the water. This is where the GM cars are put. We talked to an AMPORTS employee through the fence. He said they are expecting the Durban Highway around the middle of October. I will pinpoint it better by tracking. This employee said this ship will be unloaded in ONE DAY. He cautioned us to be careful taking pictures "because these guys are going to haul ass around the corner going up Oak Road and these cars are reported to be fast!!" WOW. He also told us the best place to get pictures. We would like to be able to get some window sticker shots. Then we went up the hill to AMPORTS HQ and low and behold one of the big bosses was coming out the door. He was very polite. I asked if I could get a pass to take pictures of the Chevy SS's that are due into the yard next door?? He got a look like "this guy knows something or what?? I explained my mission. He was very good with that. No BS. He said yes that a "large" shipment of SS's was coming the middle of October. He said he would grant me a pass today if the cars were there AND the car was "launched" already. He said General Motors is very picky about anyone taking unauthorized pictures of a car that is not public yet. He said however out on the street is no problem. I would mention these gentlemens names, but I don't want any stuff stirred up here. We don't know who reads this board. About the official "launch date"?? He said, November 1. He also told us of a good spot to take pictures as they round the corner and go up the hill. If the cars are put in the front of the yard we will be able to zoom on some window stickers!! Matter of fact you could almost touch them if they are up front. My friends camera is awesome. All of the lots at the port now have cars in them. Alot of cars going out. More out than in. And the yard by the HQ where our cars are going will need to be thinned out to get 1000 cars in there. Anyhow, the big boss asked for my e-mail and promised to let me in on "official movements" of the cars!!! I was like a little kid in a candy store. I had tears in my eyes. My buddy said are you alright?? I said, "I just want my car, bad".
