Service Airbag

702 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  tlash
Hi everyone, this is my first post. I just bought a 2017 SS. It has 18,000 miles on it and I have driven about 200 of them. Yesterday the Servuce Airbag notification came on. Then went off. Then back on later and is now off. Any suggestions for quick fix or am I off to the dealer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I love the car just a little disappointed. Thanks

Welcome to the forum @J.C. First thing that I would do is to make certain the battery is good as that can cause multiple issues with the SS.

The passenger seat occupant sensor has been an issue in the past that has caused the condition.

Yeah I was just reading multiple other people stating that. I guess I'm headed to the dealer since I just got it and it has a warranty ugh....gotta love going to the dealership!!

Make certain to not have electronics on the seat either, another known catalyst for the issue. Search the term service airbag above (sounds like you may have already) and you can run through some possibilities and try to eliminate a few of them before the visit. (y)

In addition to the possibilities mentioned above, make sure that you don’t have a cheap phone charger plugged into one of the 12V outlets. My wife and I have been on a few long trips and she likes to charge her phone using a cheap charger that she picked up somewhere. When the cheap charger is plugged in I randomly see that message, but when no charger is plugged in, it never appears. As you mentioned, the message can come and go at any time.

One more possibility to check!

Thanks so much everyone. So I am a 48 yo gear head always had Impala's currently a 60 and a 64 and an 05. So the technology in newer muscle is a little challenging. I am waiting on my owners manual...they forgot to put it in glove box. Trying to figure out the shifter for manual shift. Any help is appreciated. Do I have to use paddles or can I ratchet shift? This is what I am used to driving. The electronics are headlights...but I built it myself!

In the meantime, you can browse the Owner's Manual online here: SS Owner's Manuals - 2014 thru 2017

Cool, thanks @good2go. That helps.
I don’t think I’ve seen it mentioned here, but having any aftermarket device plugged into the OBD port has a potential of causing a number of false flags to show in the instrument cluster. My Chevrolet app mentions this specifically.

Yup, I had a reputable OBD scanner in mine, and it randomly did all kinds of crazy stuff, like turning off the whole instrument cluster and gauges while the car was driving (still drove just fine like that).
So I have plugged nothing into anything so far. This is a bad sensor, which I see is a reoccurring issue on passenger side seat.

You mean putting your phone on passenger seat is a bad idea?

Correct. Read through the linked thread below for just a few of the possibilities that may trigger the "service airbag" warning:

J.C.,
I wanted to follow up on your post and as crazy as it sounds, my service airbag came on the day after you posted your issue. My car has a build date of 11/15, so battery is 7.5 years old and past time to replace. I ordered one from RockAuto on Sunday and it arrived today. I charged it when I got home and installed it. Fired it up and still had the service airbag light & message. I then rode around the block, came home and shut it off. Took off 15 mins later to fill up and no service airbag light or message. After filling up, still no issues. Hope you have the same luck I did with the battery change.
