You will want to upgrade the tweeters too. If you do just the fronts, you'll find the mid-range is much clearer and the treble will sound muddy in comparison. I ran it this way for a bit before I did the tweeters.
I recently upgraded everything but the rear deck speakers and it's all running through the factory hardware. I used simple filters, or "bass blockers", with my new tweeters and it all sounds great. It could use more bass, but I don't feel like dealing with the rear deck given the options out there.
I have no experience with the PowerBass speakers. I can say in my experience, putting components in the lower door where they aren't originally does move the soundstage lower. My GTO is setup in the way you're thinking and it needs the stock tweeters changed out. SS tweeters are better than the GTO, but not by much.
For me, the Bose DSP is hit or miss and I alternate between Normal and Centerpoint depending on the song.
