Looked at an SS at the dealer today. So are the outside rear view mirrors NOT painted Phantom Black? They looked black but it didn't have the metallic look, it looked more like a flat black.

Is there some protective coating they forgot to take off before putting it in the showroom or are they just flat black in color.

They are plain black plastic I polished mine because of scratches.

All..I too wondered why GM decided not to paint them..(Probably to save money I'm sure - LOL)...The PBM paint is an awesome color; when clean; then you notice the plain (flat black) caps around the mirrors? Even the car wash detail people wonder why they weren't painted to match and actually tried waxing for me! Maybe these were for another line and we got em??

My SS has an appointment 2/1/2014 to have 3M or expel clear bra fitted for front end, lower rockers, and mirrors done...My way of cutting down on stone chips. This is a DD for me, and I want to limit chips...yeah I know some don't like it, but it helps...
I've thought about doing this as well as I've found someone that does high-end cars here in Southern Calif..No one had a kit avail so this company design dept actually made the kit using 3M film..Are you doing full or half hood? Take pics if ya can when done..Curious to see if there is any noticable line if doing half hood as I've got PBM color..

The guy that's doing the SS did my 08 C6 Z06...He has been in business over 10 years...He has the templet for our cars...I am also doing partial hood...This guy is meticulous in his work...His shop is 3 hours from my home, the drive is well worth it for his expertise...If anyone is considering any clear bra material, make sure you use someone that really knows there business...I get a 5 year warranty with this shop...Yes, if you are withing 3 ft, there is a very faint line you will see especially on partial hood...But I don't find that detracting, at least for me...Beats the S**T out of looking at stone chips, with touch up paint spots...I will get some pics while I am there...

Body-color mirror scalps

The ORV mirrors on VE/VF (Commodore/G8/SS) and WM/WN (Caprice) are all the same, from what I've been able to determine.

The Caprice PPV's, regardless of body color, are all built with black plastic mirror covers (scalps)--not painted, but plastic with the color in the actual molded material. Sounds like that's what was used on the SS with black metallic paint. I believe other SS cars have the scalps in the actual body color--and assume the parts are painted.

I did convert to painted scalps on the PPV (Alto Grey Metallic), using G8 "paint to match" parts, which were pre-painted off the car - pictures tell the story (PN's shown in first photo):

Great info..This has become a top of discussion lately as I have the PBM but the scalps are flat black and not color matched and even when car is clean you can see a defin difference..So you ordered through GM Parts..Approx cost for scalps? Also when you removed the original scalps did the clips break forcing you to buy new?

92193905 - $28.82 (list) > $18.33 (dealer cost)
92193906 - $30.82 (list) > $19.60 (dealer cost)

I used GM Parts Direct just to grab prices--you may be able to do better locally.

(quote)
*92193906 All COVER 1 $19.60
*
92193905 All COVER 1 $18.33

Shipping & Processing & Handling:$13.17
Your Total Charges: $51.10

Standard GM Retail Price for these parts is $59.64. Even shipped to your door, you saved $8.54 (14%).

No issues with removing the old parts and installing the new (did mine in summer in Texas)--a buddy here did say he had trouble in cold weather with breakage of some of the tangs, so it's either a good idea to be sure it's warm weather, or let a pro do it so they can take the blame if something happens!

Obviously, the new parts will need to be painted to match the specific SS color desired, or something more unusual, if preferred.

There is an installation video for mirror scalps in this link that CP pointed me to, found on ebay Australia - company is selling mirrors scalps with LED lights. The demo makes it look really easy/simple to R&R the actual part(s). Not sure if they offer them pre-painted, but I think so, and possibly even a carbon fiber finish.

In case there's any concern regarding the compatibility of the scalps for VE also fitting VF, that was confirmed by CP and by the DRL web site/ebay store owner (linked above).
