Rear Brembo Brakes???

75423 Views 170 Replies 52 Participants Last post by  Smirnoff67
Just putting this out there. Does anyone know if the Rear Brembo brakes on the Camaro SS would fit the Chevy SS? Both cars are on the zeta platform correct? I think it would be great to have Brembo brakes all the way around.

I don't see there being any reason they wont fit. So long as there is clearance from the rim it can be done.
I've been investigating brake upgrades on my older Commodore and basically anything can be done if you want it to be done and have the right workshop do it.
IIRC I have seen rears for the VE Redline (which will fit VF) being sold via a US site just can't remember the name right now

People have made brackets for both GTOs and G8s to install Brembo's from various applications such as CTS-V2 6 piston fronts, CTS-V1/Camaro 4 piston fronts, CTS-V & Camaro rears, etc. All that is usually needed is a rotor, adapter bracket, and sometimes hardware for the emergency/parking brake to function properly.

To fit Brembo rear calipers will also require a different (larger) rotor. I recall there are 2 potential issues:

1. Camaro only fits the Brembo F/R setup with 20" wheels--19's will not clear, and I'm not sure if the issue is at front or rear. Camaro SS and first-gen CTS-V front rotors are 355mm (14") same as new SS sedan, but Camaro/CTS rears are 365mm (14.4"), where SS sedan rears are 324mm (12.75").

The second-generation CTS-V and Camaro ZL1 brakes (6-piston front) are a newer design, and I'm not sure if they will fit behind 19's in any application, since front rotors are even larger at 370mm (14.6") with the same 14.4" rotors fitted at rear.

Clearance is not rotor-based, of course, but the larger rotor pushes the caliper out radially, and that's where the problem with clearance gets into the 19" vs 20" wheel issue. Some wheels do require a spacer to move the wheel away from interference with the caliper. The first-generation (2004-2007) CTS-V caliper will fit and clear 19's, and I recall CTS actually used 18" wheels (with proper rear-of-wheel contour), but there is the second issue to deal with. vvvv

2. Park brake shoe size is different between Camaro/CTS & G8/SS. The fix previously was to have a special shoe with much thicker lining made for the G8 crowd to fit the Camaro/CTS 365mm rotors, since the park brake "drum in hat" is quite a bit larger (not sure, but I think the difference is 25mm - 190 vs 215).

I've actually given some thought (for future upgrade of my Caprice PPV) to putting a sleeve in the larger rear rotor hat instead of chasing special brake shoes.

Thanks Navy Lifer could brackets be used of Camaro to get proper spacing for larger rotors. This is all that's need on the vett to change out from standard to z51 rotors.

Doug, I'm not sure what would be needed--how close to "bolt-on" the Camaro/CTS Brembo rear setup may be. Need to dig into it for my own purposes, too. The G8 crowd has it all figured out, but I've not looked for the links to provide full details.

I'm still not clear about the combination of parts involved and whether the end result allows the 19" wheels to remain. I'll try to do some research and report, unless someone else comes up with the answer(s) in the interim. I think the biggest issue is going to be keeping the park brake functional.

This thread shows a G8 with the CTS-V rear caliper setup on a 19" wheel--still digging for references on doing the changeover.

Here's a thread that talks about the brake shoe issue--no idea if anyone has followed up to make more parts.

CTSV Brembos will fit just fine on the rear with the factory SS wheels. Brembos clear some 18s. Same with the Camaro Brembos. Yes you need the bracket that is no longer made or you need the HSV rear rotors. Same setup as any G8 runs.

I think apart from visual improvement. It might throw off the braking bias.

Well I've decided to give it a go and try to fit a set of Brembo brakes on the rear. I have an extra set of rear calipers, brake lines and rotors left over from a project on my 2010 Camaro SS. I'm still in the research mode with part numbers and fitment.

You will either need an adjustable portion valve or one from car that has front and rear brembos ie Camaro need to have vehicle of same weight. More to it than just screwing stuff on.

You will not need to mess with any kind of proportioning valve. The rear Brembos actually help level the car out during hard braking. Much better and more stable. Even when doing track days you would not need a proportion valve.

Didn't hurt brake bias on the G8, shouldn't effect it here.

Remember, the only difference in G8 GT and GXP braking systems is the front rotors and calipers, all else is the same.

Owners that have switched to full Camaro setups haven't had issues. BTW, CTS-V Gen 1 front calipers, Camaro front calipers and GXP front calipers all had the same part #. Camaro just used 14mm bolts vs. 12mm bolts on the G8.

Could always look into the new Z28 brakes. Z28 runs 19" wheels front and rear so they should clear diamete wise, but might not as far as offset.

The price of those brakes may not clear the wallet ...

Well one thing I have learned from my car hobby is that its not cheap to go fast or stop on a dime (which is an oxymoron in itself).

The SS uses all the same rear brake parts as the G8 so the Brembo swap would be exactly the same as those cars.

The SEMA SS had rear Brembos :D

You know what would be a nasty fitment? Carbon ceramic ZR1 breaks. I think they are only 11,000 dollhairs.
