How many are planning to tune, cam, and add headers to their new SS to really tap into its potential???

Anybody know if the SS has the E38 ECM?

If the SS had come with the LT1 (or if it does next year), is there any aftermarket support yet?
I'm still wondering if I even want an LT1. I'm turned off by it having Displacement On Demand and variable timing. If it was simply the LS3 reconfigured with direct injection, I'd be all for it. The experience in the G8 community is that the DOD is a weak link in an otherwise solid engine. The first thing that I would do to the LT1 would be to swap in a DOD delete kit.

The AFM lifters are the weakest link tbs .... randomly my Yukon will sound like a hammering beast. The only way to stop it (restarting or driving doesn't help) is to goose it over 3K to get a surge of oil pressure and uncollaspe them. The two on the pass side are the usual culprits but the drivers side messes with my head occasionally.

GM's policy is only replace them if they do it ALL the time...an "occasional" occurrence is "normal". And the claim is difficult at best even for me! Plus it's a major job and a crapshoot that the replacements will be better.

I would not have ordered my SS if it had the AFM's or VVT.

My 06 Impala SS with the 5.3 LS2 had a lifter issue also. Some mornings it was so bad I would shut it off and let it sit for a while. Then go back, start it and all was fine. Yes, I agree, AFM can be annoying, especially if your wife uses the car first thing in the morning and comes running back in saying," your car sounds like it's going to break something".

Likely it may have used the same ECM that is in the Corvette, so chances are tuning would have been an option early on.

I don't think GM changed their head design much, so headers should have been an option early on as well (especially as everything seems to be the same as VE in that regard. So plenty of header options.)

My G8 GT came with AFM/DOD and I swapped it out with non-DOD hardware so that it's more similar to the LS2/LS3 setup. I think a lot of the camaro SS guys are swapping out their DOD and their variable valve timing, but I'm not as familiar with what all is required to ditch the variable timing. As for the DOD delete, there are various kits out there, but they are all primarily GM parts that you use to swap out the hardware with prices ranging from $500 to roughly $1400 depending on who you buy it from and what parts it comes with. I did the install myself so I saved a bunch of $$ on that piece so labor will cost you a bit.

It definitely woke up my G8 GT, because it came with a little baby cam to work well with the DOD hardware. Lots of good info on the various G8 forums so that you don't have to start from scratch with the SS. Simply look to see what mods work well with the G8 and reapply to the SS to save you a bunch of research and development. In my book, headers, high flow cats, cold air intake, tune, and cam are a must if you're looking to beat up on some of the other cars out there (Camaro SS, mustang GT, Mopar stuff).

I'm soooo looking forward to doing a DOD delete to my G8 GT. What cam did you go with? G8 GT V8
Livernois stage 1, but am considering pulling it again for a Lunati grind that's supposed to be a pretty sweet setup, but am going to do some more research before doing anything. If you're looking for a strong cam with just a tad bit of lope and really good street manners, the Livernois stage 1C is a nice one too. The stage 1 that I have has some lope to it and is just about as big as you want to go without adding a stall converter.
