Any Pittsburgh area owners want to join me for some autocrossing on Saturday? I'll be at Pitt-Race for the SCCA event. Registration begins at 8:30. Runs start at 10:00. 3 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon according to the Steel Cities info page. They have free loaner helmets.

A short video of my worst run of the day yesterday - the only one in track mode with all the nannies turned off. I should do it more often, though!

AutoX is fun. Hope you enjoyed doing in your SS. I don't do it too much because typically you are there all day to run 5 times with each run being around a minute. Not enough seat time to spend the whole day and have to chase cones around a hot parking lot when its not your group's turn.

So, you mentioned track mode and all the nannies turned off. Those are mutually exclusive, as in not possible to be both things. i.e. in track mode you are using all the "nannies", just the intervention thresholds and responses are modified. double push of the TCS/stabilitrak button.

Or, you could turn off both the traction control and stability control systems by holding down the TCS/stabilitrak button. I don't think you can disable all of the "nannies" by using the button though. You likely still have ABS and electronic brake force distribution, maybe some other things. Very different than a real analog car which doesn't try to help you when you lock up single tire.

One more thing. GM recommends changing the diff fluid after the first competitive driving event. Probably not a bad idea.

I agree about the whole day thing. Unless you're willing to throw yourself at it heart and soul it can get stale. But yes, it IS fun! I always tell people that no matter what kind of car they have they should do it at least once just to see what the car will do at speed when that errant ball rolls out in front of them. Having done a LOT of autocrossing in a Triumph TR8, a couple of Ford Escort GTs, and even the Impala SS I had to try the SS. This odd Saturday event was the perfect fit.

As far as the Track mode/nannie thing - I pushed the trac control button twice. The first time it shuts of traction control, the second time adds stability control off and showed Track in the upper right. (I never thought you could ever shut the ABS off...)

Still learning...

That puts it into track mode, which leaves all of the nannies on despite the lights that indicate they are off, what it does is changes the intervention thresholds and responses. The car is still trying to save you from yourself. Hold the button to turn most of the nannies off, ABS excepted, there is no button to turn that off. For autox, which is low speed, room to spin the car without consequence, I'd turn it all off. Experiment and see which is faster for you.

I once did a autox like event on a frozen lake with the SS and track mode was very intrusive and made the car slow around the course. Turning it off allowed the slip angles and throttle control needed to go fast on that surface and the SS turned out to be faster than everything there, including all the AWD cars, except STIs on studded tires.

Well thanks - now I'm gonna have to find another day to go again to try that out!
:laugh

Seriously, thanks. I may not get to do it until next year, though.
Great story about the ice racing, too!
