Even a guy I know who works on the production line can't believe the Chev gets black plastic whilst all the Aussie caps are painted
LOL..GM prob thought US buyers would not notice? Hmmm..(No I'm sure it's a huge way the Bean Counters save money..Chevy Exec's say take off shelf and install as is! Holden Exec's say we want our's painted to match..Peanuts in cost for what we are paying!!

So, I'm confused (what's new!?). The forum pic at the top of this screen looks to be a Silver SS with black mirror scalps but Headrat's new baby has body color scalps? So is it now just the PBM SS's had flat black scalps but others are painted body color or I'm I just way off base and don't know what a "scalp" is?

This is a pair of Mirror Scalps

PBM Chevy SS have black mirror scalps but they are not painted Phantom Black Metallic.
The scalps might be painted black with no metallic or might be bare black plastic.

Ken, I previously posted in another thread on this topic--and you even acknowledged with a "like"! ;)

I'm curious if the paint-to-match parts I used (neutral grey color) are also specified in Australia, by PN, since CP makes reference to black parts that are paint-to-match--or if the PN for the black unpainted covers/scalps may be the same as used on PBM SS and any PPV.

Tonkin Online Parts <(PPV - see part #1 - cover)

PN for PPV mirror covers is 92193907 & 92193908 - these are unpainted, and are the same black (color is molded in) parts used on all PPV's, regardless of exterior color.

Tonkin Online Parts <(G8 - see part #1 - cover)

The paint-to-match parts I used (from G8 parts list) are 92193905 & 92193906.

The term "scalp" is of Holden origin, I'm thinking. If you look at the actual boxes the parts came in posted in my earlier thread (linked above), the label reads SCALP, but the US GM parts book calls it a COVER--the parts book has many interesting variances from common GM North America terms when looking at G8, PPV, and SS info, including identification/terminology, artwork for Holden car (RHD) for US cars, etc. Many traditional locations of parts in the GMNA catalogs, by parts group, are either missing or found in another parts group not even used in the GMNA parts system.

On my PBM SS the mirror caps are a painted a black non-metallic. So, they are painted, just not body color.
I suspect they're not even painted on a PBM car. I'll have to research the SS parts book next week (via dealer). Tonkin does not have 2014 SS in their online parts data yet.

They are not painted on PBM cars I know I used compound with polisher and got some black on the pads but not paint it was black plastic.

I wonder if it varies by car/production run?
When Chris did my detail he polished the caps without issue. I will have to ask him how he determined they were a single stage black paint and not plastic.

When you take off the original (Flat Black Scalps) from the mirrors it actually says Black on the inside! They are not painted but molded black plastic from Holden! Reason why I had them painted PBM..Now all other colors of SS are painted to match car, etc..

Here is my passenger mirror cap, before any polish or wax:

Here is my driver mirror cap after polish and wax:

If it was strictly a non-painted black plastic, then it would not polish out to a mirror finish and the wax would not adhere the same.
Again, not trying to start an argument as the only black SS I have seen is mine. However, this goes back to my question, did the mirror caps change from black plastic, no paint... to a single stage black painted plastic at some point in the production run? Not something I can answer.

OK, just got off the phone with my local dealer parts guru.

The only covers listed for SS as service parts are the 92193905 & 92193906 "paint-to-match" version, as mentioned earlier, same as for G8.

This may or may not put this question to bed, unless or until someone pops off the cover on a black SS to see what the underlying/interior markings and color of the molded plastic may be.

Even if unpainted black covers may actually be used in production, which remains as the underlying question, it's not a given that those parts would be listed for service (92193907 & 92193908).

There is a PBM SS at the local dealer (Bill Holt Chevrolet Canton GA) <click to see car - it has been sitting outside and not driven for so long the rotors are heavily rusted--same car I was able to post underside pictures of back in November, and the only SS the dealer has had to this point.

I'll take my camera and see what can be revealed once the sun reaches that side of the building. This car has had window tint and carbon fiber overlay on the Bowtie(s) installed.

Ur right...They are primer only from USA GM Dealers so then you must paint to match required..I purchased a second set (as noted in earlier post from CP in AU) which are the exact part from Holden that came on our cars..They are "FLAT BLACK MOLDED PLASTIC" for the PBM colored only direct from Holden..Those with other colored cars; yours are painted to match..

C.P. will not normally provide PN's in discussions here, but generally leaves PN info on the packaging when a purchase (from him) is made.

So, if you can, please provide the PN's of the covers/scalps he sold you, as that could be helpful.

I can't see why there should be any parts proliferation beyond the 4 PN's (2 left & 2 right) already posted. I maintain that the same molded black part (if it IS, in fact, unpainted on PBM cars) is the same PN used on every Caprice PPV, regardless of color.

Maybe we need C.P. to comment--how about it, if you're reading this?

Bottom line:
1. are there PN's for scalps/covers in addition to 92193905 thru 92193908? (not counting chrome/accessory versions)
2. what are the PN's, if so?

Original Flat Black scalps from Factory - Inside
Automotive exterior Vehicle Bumper Auto part Hood

Hopefully this helps..The Body Shop did say they are Flat Black molded ABS Plastic and not PBM color as car so they painted/color matched PBM which you can see difference in the sun when car is clean..LOL

Outside Rear View Mirror Cover - Chrome
Help your vehicle make a fashion statement with our Outside Rearview Mirror Covers. Available in chrome.

I'm not certain whether these install just like stock parts, or if they are overlays that adhere to the stock scalp/cover with adhesive strips.

FYI - G8 Accessories, PN still shows to be good.
