This question is (for now) directed at our Aussie members.

How is the paint quality on the VF? I currently own a G8 and the paint on the front bumper is so fragile, that it will chip if you look at it too long. This is a much discussed issue with many G8 owners. I realize that the VF hasn't been on the road in AU for very long, but have any of you experienced chipping yet? I guess a better question would be for those in the know... Has Holden changed up anything to improve the quality and durability of the paint?

I've had a VF SS-V Redline for a few weeks now, which is the nearest model we have to the Chev SS. There have been complaints about paint quality from some HSV owners around VF, but the issues they discuss seem to be around the HSV specific parts added to the donor car.

This is the first GM car I have owned, although I have driven quite a few VE's as well over the years. My car is quite good and overall I think it is noticeably better and brighter than the VE paint. Holden did apparently spend money on the paint process for VF and have had a fella out from the US to work specially on build quality, so I would guess paint got some attention.

Orange peel is very evident, but really every mass produced car seems to have that now. There is some slight variation between colours on the metal and plastic parts, but again, this seems fairly common across brands and its certainly better then most.

Paint coverage on the front of the car, bumper, bonnet (hood) seems quite good. I had the front bumper off my car to change some trim on the grill and was very pleased with coverage and consistency of the paint application.

I've done around 1800 km's (1100 miles) of mostly country driving with no problems so far with the paint.

Overall I would rate it as a step up from what you were used to with the G8. Indeed the quality of the whole car is a step up in materials and finish. I've noticed for example that panel gaps on some interior trim pieces is much better on the VF and external panel gaps seem more consistent.

Its no Audi, but honestly I have no complaints and think the car is very good for the money. I would rate the overall finish and use of materials as two or three steps up on the G8.

DanielSS-V,

Thanks for the reply. This is exactly what myself and I'm sure many current G8 owners considering the SS was wanting to hear.

Keeing paint scratch free

What I'm more worried about is all the plastic stuck to the paint for protection. It's been on my car since Aug 30th that will be 2 and half months should be a pain. It just hit the states I hope will sit in Hot Ca. sun 2 weeks and ride train for another 2 weeks. My car is to have fluid only checks I will fill tank with hitest and wash and detail the black paint. Don't want a lot jockey with a brush on a stick washing it and putting scratches in it for me to buff out. Washing is easier than buffing ennuff said,

A rear bumper re-paint(after accident) and two clay-bar sessions later and I'm still working on removing rail dust from my White Hot G8. I don't believe that this has anything to do with the paint quality, but rather the long road to get here.

The last new car I bought I went and purchased the paint protection. I by passed the dealerand went straight to the mob who did all the dealers work. Gives it a little more durability

I notice that silver is generally the colour you pick up variations from metal work to plastic the most.

i've seen it with all sorts of colors

I think black hides it the best. and even then. if there is alot of pearlescent in the black you will still notice.

there are lots of paint coatings out there that can help with paint hardness against swirls and marring.

and there is also clearbra front end vinyl wraps to avoid rock chips/.

OP. Having a G8 for almost 5 years and 91,000 miles, your question was great.

If I had it to do all over again, I would have had a clear bra or something like it on this car from Day 1.

It's great hearing this feedback on the VF. A little reassuring.
