It could have been an rpm lockout. It won't let you upshift if there are not enough RPMs or engine power. Basically it won't let you bog the engine.

paddle shifters?
I test drove one today. The left paddle shifted down fine, but the right paddle would not upshift. The dealer is telling me it is a programming issue. Does anybody have any insight on this? The transmission shifts fine in auto and with the shift lever.

Very true. They prob didn't know anything about the car.Typical dealer personnel answer.
