Bad way to start a thread, but I just got laid off.

Second time in my life this has happened, 2008 was the last.

We will be O.K.

Thought I would open a new Thread for others that may be in the same boat, that could use some help/support.

If there are folks in our SS community that need help in any way, I will do what I can to make a difference, feel free to send me a PM.

I'm sorry to hear that. We have 4 week furloughs starting next week. I'm afraid this is going to be potentially worse than 2008, I hope this thing runs its course much sooner than they seem to be projecting.

Many comments here are from those who aren't currently in your shoes, but hopefully knowing your forum friends care can perhaps give you an incremental source of strength.

It is quite normal to be upset, Americans are conditioned to find our self-worth through our jobs. Just remember it's not you, it's them. We're rooting for you to find a place where if you're not making more, at least you're more content.

Easy for me to say because I'd never want to work someplace that would hire me as an employee.

After the GC is Mount Kosciuszko next @Topcat? Always wanted to complete the Seven Summits and Grand Slam before CPAP...layoffs suck but we are not only resilient but eSSential!

I see you're in reading PA - scary times out east!

We're considered essential as we directly support transportation. Trying to keep hysteria low and a cool demeanor because I need the whole crew working.

best of luck.

I am dealing with the situation with a totally positive attitude, I know it will get better eventually.

I worry a bit because my wife, Kelly, has way too many things on our "honey do" list that I haven't been able to put time aside for, looks like I won't be getting a "vacation" because of the layoff. :)

I am actually pretty close to retirement age, so worst case scenario, there is that option.

Thing is, I really do enjoy working, have had a job since I was 12 years old.

I am looking into some volunteer work locally so I can help other folks that need it more than me.

I've got a feeling that this is going to be a very long, very sad thread. Looks like I'm finally going to get around to putting some order into the man cave. My sincere wishes for good luck and good health go out to all of you.

My son's tech company in Austin layed off 25% of their workforce today. 'Disturbing' may not be a strong enough word for the domino effect that's gaining momentum.

There some in every industry that will use this crisis as the scapegoat for actions they wanted to take but didn't want the heat for doing it. Now they get to do it and get a huge tax break or even a bailout by the government. Then some in government will use it to maximum advantage as well.
It is we, the so-called common citizen, that bear the brunt of it all.

Sorry to hear that. Happened to me in 2008, too, as I was working for a GM dealer at the time. You sound like you're going to be ok. I hope you are going to be alright and not like me in 2008, I lost everything. Won't be the same this time. If they send me home, I'm stayin' home!

As much as I hated to do it, I filed for Unemployment Compensation today.

Will have to wait a few weeks to see how that works out.

One of the requirements for UC in Pennsylvania is going to Career Link Offices, within 30 days, to submit a resume and talk to a job placement specialist so that they can aid in helping me find new employment.

The Career offices are closed due to our current situation, go figure.

Being in the printing field is not going to do me any favors as far as finding new work.

Guess it is time to find a new occupation, anybody out there hiring a beer or food quality taste tester?

I am in construction and run a concrete pump truck. Usually slow until april or so. So I prepare for slow times and can live on the unemployment check i get. My wifes a cyber school teacher and under contract. And she is back to work. I have 23 more weeks of unemployment (just re opened my claim). The only major thing is im not going to pay my wifes school loan down as fast. Hopefully people dont live paycheck to paycheck here
And have to start selling their ss’s

Best of luck to all. Luckily im 20 years from retirement my retirement took a huge hit

The human and economic devastation from an undetermined length of workforce home confinement is going to make C19 look like a paper cut. I get that we're trying to prevent over whelming hospitals for the minority of the population that might end up there, but shutting the global economic engine down is going to affect 100% of us in some capacity. You think the suicide rate has had a disturbing trend in the last 10 years? Just wait until the entire globe is dealing with hopelessness and despair.

Welp!...It's official, we have been declared an "essential service", but our hours have been reduced from 7 - 7 M-F and 7 - 4 Sat, to 7-4 M- F, closed Saturday, Sales dept hrs are 10 - 7, 7 days a week.

Who'd-a-thunk-it, car repair an essential service, and mostly what we're getting is oil changes and warranty repairs...nothing essential about that.

I thought service might stay open, but I didn't think sales would be. Somebody has to service all the delivery vehicles that'll be dropping off internet orders.

If I caught it right a few hours ago PA car dealers are not essential and must close but auto repair is essential and stays open. Obviously UC lots close. So until clarified one would safely bet sales closed service open.

Best of luck to all of you that will be impacted financially by this. And I mean that for people that are currently in the work force and those that are retired living off of your 401k. My wife and I are fortunate enough to be in industries that likely will not be affected by this and are still many years from retiring and having to draw off of our retirement accounts but I feel terrible for everyone that this is affecting. We're doing out part by self quarantining to try and slow the spread and I wish more would head this advice. People need to quit thinking about themselves and start thinking about how what they are doing can affect others.
