I got a text Tuesday morning that my silver SS had arrived and was being prepped. I had meetings all day out of town and wasn’t able to get to the dealership until 7:00pm. Because it had been snowing in Central Ohio all day, they had my car waiting inside. I knew I couldn’t drive it that night because I never would have made it out of the lot in the snow on the tires so I just had a good close look at the car, listened to the engine, played with the HUD display, cranked up the stereo and tried the parking assist.

To be honest, on first impression I was disappointed with the styling; the car did look better in person than in the photos but it still had a strong Malibu influence and looked much blander than I had hoped. I’ve spent the last 20 years driving practical, family-oriented sedans, SUVs and occasionally my wife’s mini-van and I was ready for a major change.

That night I struggled to come to terms with what I really wanted in my next car, the fact that the $50K SS looked like a Malibu and some doubts about how the SS would look next to the BMWs and Audis my friends and business associates drove. I had a refundable deposit on the SS and the final sale was dependent to my test drive which wouldn’t happen for a few days until the weather cleared and the road conditions improved. I thought seriously that night about taking a closer look at a BMW or Audi (I wouldn’t consider a Charger or Chrysler 300 and I had looked at and driven a Cadillac CTS-V, Lexus and Infiniti earlier and wasn’t interested in any of them). That night I finally realized I wasn’t looking at the SS to impress anyone, to make a statement or to try and get a drive-on part in the next Fast and Furious move. What I really wanted more that anything was a good looking, great driving Chevy/Pontiac like the ones I always wanted when I was growing up and first driving but couldn’t afford.

The next morning I went back to the dealership to take another look at my SS; they’d moved it into the showroom and were keeping it locked. It actually looked a lot better me seeing it the second time after I’d thought more about what I really wanted from my next car. I had to go back out of town on Wednesday but will be back for my test drive Friday and I’m sure I won’t be disappointed. The SS doesn’t have the dramatic styling I think I might have liked but I do think it’s going to be everything I’ve wanted in this car. It may look a little bland but for me, especially compared to the Charger and Chrysler, it looks fantastic and I know from my recent test drive of a 2009 G8 GXP it will be a great ride.

The similarity with the Malibu is no accident, just like the similarity between BMW models is no accident (you can swap BMW with any manufacturer).
Personally I think the SS looks allot better than the SRT8's, but that may be due to my 61 years.
I'm looking forward to your road test comparisons.

It's not a design that jumps out at you, it has subtle aggression that gradually shows itself over time. The "stance" is something that is only achievable with a RWD sport sedan, short front overhang, pumped guards are probably the only give away to those that know what they're looking at
Very well put. At first I thought is seemed bland. After looking at a silver one in the driveway for two weeks, I have found the car got better looking and the aggressive stance more pronounced. Add to that the indisputable fact that people have come up to ask and the car is more striking than first thought. The car has grace and styling

If you are used to seeing the G8 I think your brain see's the familiar doors on the SS and has a little brain snap when the expected front is not there.
It will be interesting to see if you think it looks better again next time you see it.

Simply put the car is more subtle and unique than most high dollar sedans out there! I bet you won't see another one in person on the road for months. Can you say exclusivity? Enjoy it for awhile, if later down the road you decide its not for you there's certainly someone on this board who gladly will.

Here's a couple Early sketches of VF the second sketch is what became VF, Originally they wanted to re-skin the Zeta with all new body work. Due to the lack of development funds they where told to keep the passenger cell the same as it was a 5 star performer in crash tests so why change it.

What essentially became VF

One possible rear end sketch which a couple of elements made it to VF the number plate location and the general tail light location

Remembering that Holden designers were also involved with input into the Malibu (not sure how much input but exterior design was part of it) as it was to become a Global model and development was all around the same time frame circa 2009

I like the design in the last sketch above in that the diffuser does not flow up into and around the area of the number plate and doesn't reach around the bottom corners of the bumper cover. I do not like the single exhaust configuration of that sketch.

So one BIG reason why I really decided not to get a BMW was the styling. A 335i and a 328 look exactly the same. In fact, most BMWs look exactly the same except differences in sizes between the series. Obviously performance differs. The Audis (such as the A4 and S4, A6 etc) look a lot more like each other than the SS looks compared to the Malibu.

I mean, when people look at my car from the sides, and see 19inch wheels, brembo brakes, and the aerodynamic look of the SS, there is no mistaking it for a common sedan. As much as I know about cars, sometimes from a distance I can confuse an A4 for an S4 or one BMW for another. Not so with the SS in my opinion.
I do love that people don't expect what the SS is packing, which in my opinion, makes it that much more awesome.

Headrat: Exactly. In my neighborhood of Los Angeles, we have innumerable trust fund babies in 328s on their 16th birthdays. To make it worse, the drivers are beyond bad. They are oblivious while they make u-turns from the parking lane in the middle of business districts. This car, on the other hand, is different.
