Really had a fine day today. After taking delivery in the rain on Saturday and then cleaning up the car on Sunday and then spending time on Monday for a few hours while they took care of the items they missed on Saturday I had the chance to my black SS on its first real drive.

The weather was perfect, clear sky and warm but not hot ,temps (low 70's). I did not want go first on to I-95 so my wife and I took the back road west to Deland and then north along 19 thru Ocala National Forest to Palatka then east to Bunnell then south to I-95 and home just south of Daytona. All toll about 160 miles. I experienced no problems except for a long stretch of no passing zone on a two lane road behind an SUV. First change I got down shifted into fourth then fifth went by him just shy of 90MPH. It was amazing how easily I got to that speed. Reminds me of my 2006 Z51 Corvette but not as quick as my Z06's.

I kept varying the speed not wanting it to get stuck thinking it only could go one speed. I have found out this helps break in the engine and drive train. I have about 400 miles total on the car so should be up on the lift this weekend changing the oil and filter which already is in the shop.

I hope everyone else gets to enjoy their car as much as I intend to.

First real ride

Yes, Mobil 1 is the oil to use. We use it in our track cars and have not had a problem. I ran Penzoil in my 1963 Z06 for 210,000 and also had no problems, but I changed oil and filter every 3000 miles. I change the Mobil 1 every 5000 miles along with the filter.

Sling Shot, have a nice trip and vary the speed and have a soft right foot for the first couple of hundred miles. Let all of the moving parts get to know each other before trumping on it to see what it sound like and feels like.

You own the 63 new, just wondering. I have a 2012 3lz z06 torch red black interior chrome wheels 25000 miles 30 months old now. This is the longest I have kept a Corvette in forever.

1963 z06

Doug
Yes I purchased the 63 Z06 in Oct 1962, took delivery the first week of June 1963. The fist batch of about 5 cars were for well known racers, me being a small time drag racer ( ran H stock automatic with a '51 Coupe de Ville) and only fouling around with a bug eye Sprite on the track GM could care less about me. I was persistent and they built my car the last week of May 1963. The only options were fuel injection, Special Performance Package, four speed (early Muncie) and posi rear.

First time I drove the car I drive down the street and try to stop at a stop sign and the cars goes straight across a major state highway. Found out you have to heat up the metallic brakes for them to work. I also immediately changed to a Hurst shifter and removed the tires, wheels and hub caps. Later this would be a great benefit in the restoration of the car in 1982. I install ET Mags with wider tires, you can see them on my web page pulling the race boat trailer.

We used the car for high speed trailering, boats lift off the trailer rails at 125 MPH. Also towed the racing BMSP Sprite that we installed a Buick 215 CI alum. engine. That car as an all out drag car, we built the engine the same as the Indy car 215's, Hilborn, Vertex, Isky, Forge True pistons 13:1,Mickey Thompson Alum rods, Thomas Magnesium rockers, Weber 3200lbs clutch and Alum flywheel. The car had T-10 trans and a 57 Chevy rear 5:12 locker located by our own design traction bars. We won a Spring National in C Altered one year with this set up.

I kept the Z06 until 2006 and sold it at BJ in Scottsdale, before that I restored the car putting back all of the parts I took off in 1963 made the restor a lot cheaper, I did all of the work myself in my basement. Won a Duntov Award, Bloomington Gold, was in the first Special Collection, in Chip's Choice, and twice in the Special Collection at the NCRS meet in Orlando and in 26 Magazines. If you want to see pictures of the car I wrote the chapter about the 63 Z06 on Z06Vette.com that has a number of pictures of the car.

Well this is getting a little long winded and I am sorry if I ramble but us 73 year old only have some much time left so we tend to spill it out.

Fast forward to 2014

This picture is my son in his 2012 Grand Sport at Sebring last month. He is passing a Z06 in this picture. He was quicker then some of the pro drivers and he just does this for fun, his real job is a jet jockey.

Next month we will at VIR with the Grand Sport and the SS.

That makes it better, LOL

Passing a ZR1 at Sebring has to be fun. He has his time down to 2:20 in traffic.

The 63 is Saddle Tan with a Saddle interior.

The 63 was a great car to grow up with, I proposed to my wife on Halloween, 1965 in this car while watching the submarine races in the Great South Bay.

Your making me cold

I moved south to get away from those temps, I remember one week we had a high of -34.

Good luck with your car, they are a lot of fun. Also meant to mention that the gas mileage for the trip was 20 mpg. Not bad when you only have 350 and less miles the car. I did see a steady 26 mpg at 60MPH. hoping to get better with the change to Mobil 1 this week end.

What group will you be at VIR with? Might be a couple of my local G8 brothers up there with you.
