Being too impatient and unwilling to jump through the hoops required to buy the Holden I did manage to find another place to spend my $50k. I caved and bought my 3rd S Class, a CPO 2010 S550.

Honestly, sometimes I wish I'd held out for the SS. While I love the big Benz for a lot of reasons, it's nowhere near as much fun as my GTO was, and it looks like the SS outshines the GTO in every measure (except price).

I'll have the S for three years (until the CPO warranty expires) then maybe I'll try my luck on a used SS (or a new one if they're still in production).

Well, we have impossible-to-keep clean black sport sedans in common :)
(Actually mine looks like a sports sedan but it's really a soft, heavy land cruiser.)

I imagine the SS would compare very favorably to the Benz in terms of being rewarding to own and enjoyable to drive. Everything I've read and seen points to the Chevy being highly refined, with a smooth, comfortable ride, plenty of content, and the kind of horsepower a Mercedes buyer would spend north of $150,000 to obtain (in an AMG S63 for example).

I'd like to spend some time with an SS and do an actual comparison to the S550.

Hehehe Buzweston beat you to it

It seems like this SS appeals to gentlemen and woman of exquisite tastes. I can see why the ricers and boy racer types hate this car.

I just finished driving the SS (red with sunroof).

(Just for reference, my car is a Mercedes S55 AMG, so comparisons are inevitable and one must remember that $120,000 cars should be a lot better than $47,000 cars.)

We all know it's a refreshed Pontiac G8, but this seems like a completely different car. The Pontiac looked narrow, while the SS sits low and looks wide (just right). It looks great. It really does look better in real life than in pictures. Fit and finish couldn't be better. When you see one, take the time to notice the gaps between the doors, fenders, etc. It's impressive.

Interior
The interior is top notch. You've seen the pictures, so let me stick to the experience. After seeing the pictures, I wondered if the front seats would look oversized and awkward in real life. They look great and they're very comfortable. It's also hard to find good pictures of the back seat, so I was pleased to find that they are contoured nicely and they look good. The arm rest isn't anything exciting, but it works. For a useful comparison, Cadillac is doing really great interiors these days. This fits in that category. It's a little nicer than the new Impala, but perhaps a slight step below Cadillac's best. A strong 9.5/10.

Turn it on and go
Keyless go. I read everything I could about the SS, and I watched all the videos I could find of exhaust sounds, but when I finally got the chance to push the button and turn the engine on, it caught me off guard. Yeah! That sounds great. It sounds like a real muscle car! The sound is the first major sign that this isn't just a family sedan.

(This paragraph contains the only two negative impressions I had about the car, and these are minor.) Out on the road, the first thing I noticed is that the suspension is stiffer than expected. The suspension is tuned for handling. It's a harder ride than my S55, even though the S55 has a stiff suspension compared to the non-AMG S-Class. After a few seconds of getting used to the difference, the ride seemed fine. The SS also transmits more road noise than my S55 or my wife's E Class (probably not a fair comparison). It's a little louder than a new Impala as well.

Onto the freeway: This car is fast and fun. Here's where the reader of this forum may appreciate the comparison to the S55. The kick down, seat of the pants experience of the SS is very similar to that of the 500 bhp dual super-charged 5.5 liter AMG engine. Like the Mercedes, the SS has an awesome sound track coming from the engine compartment. I glanced at the speedometer at the end of the ramp and was surprised to note that we were going 80. There's nothing scary about it. The car is competent and strong all the way.

We shot to the number one lane and cruised a few miles down. The SS will make a good long distance cruiser. The return trip to the dealer involved a couple of tight clover leaf turns. In my peripheral vision I saw the salesman hanging on, but the SS never lost its composure. This car will be fun in the twisties.

Final thoughts. The SS is definitely on my short list. It's the first time I've seriously thought of having a non-Mercedes in my driveway in over 20 years. It's that good.

"The Driveway Test": Will I be happy seeing it every day when I walk out my front door? Yes. It's a handsome car. The proportions are just right. Holden benchmarked the 5 Series BMW, and it's hard to improve on the style of that, right down to the "Hofmeister kink" in the C pillar.

"The Daily Drive Test": Will I be happy driving the car every day? Yes. Every time one drives, it should be fun.

"The Car Wash Test": Will I be happy comparing it to other cars at the car wash? Yes. The SS proves that prestige is more than initial cash outlay. It will be the coolest car at the car wash, even among the Mercedes Benzes, BMWs, Audis, etc. There won't be many of them around, so it has the cool factor that comes from being unusual.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. I better stay away from the SS until I'm ready to unload the Merc. For you guys who were patient enough to get an SS, you got a great car at a great price.

Beautiful car. I'm sure it reeks of refinement. Enjoy!

Thanks all for the compliments. It is a nice car...I just have some buyer's remorse for not waiting until I had a chance to play with an SS.

Just to torment myself I did an inventory search and our local Chevy store is showing a car in inventory (PBM). I'll go have a look.

(No offense taken to the Genesis comment. They do a fairly good S Class knock off for the money, and if you've never driven an S you'd find the Genesis to be a pleasant, well-executed near luxury sedan. But really they're in the same league as the Chrysler 300 and the Taurus, not a serious contender against a car with a $100k base MSRP, or against the SS.)

Not you again.

We know ur tastes in car is dreadful. No ******** would be caught driving in a classy vehicle like the ss or that e63. Go back to whatever over the top crass car u like.
What are my tastes in cars?

Here are my most recent purchases:

2008 G8 GT
2009 G8 GXP
2009 CTS-V
2014 SS

As you can see I have supported Holden vehicles and you must have me confused with a certain banned individual. I will admit I never did like the looks of the GTO though, but to each his own.

Saw an SS in person this evening. No buyer's remorse about the Merc.

I'm about to cave as well.....however I will be holding on to my G8 GXP.

Kind of hard to trade in the GXP when I have it set up the exact way I want it and I am totally in love with the way it looks vs the SS. Don't get me wrong, the SS is a fantastic looking car and the interior is top notch, but for now, I am totally happy with my GXP. I almost feel like it's one of those cars I will try and hold on to forever. Who knows, maybe in a few years when the SS is in it's final year, perhaps then I will be ready.

Right now, my money is going else ware, to the tune of 1 Letter and 2 Numbers......... :D

Smart. I can name several cars I gave up too soon because I felt like I wanted something newer only to regret it later. It's impossible to put a value on being totally happy with a car.

I don't blame you. I've never aspired to drive a Vette, although I understand many people do.

The bang for the buck play was the GTO in 2005 when GM put incentives on them to drop the price to $28,000. The SS I looked at had a dealer markup to $52,000. For that money, it might make sense to look at CPO cars, foreign and domestic. (And the SS is really an import in my book).

New cars are perfectly capable of causing headaches. I assure you in the next six months this forum will have its fair share of frustrated owners with unresolved service issues and unpleasant dealer interactions.

CPO gets you into a car that's already taken a depreciation hit, and gives you a full factory warranty. But I do agree there's something special about taking something home off the showroom floor.

For an everyday driver a cpo is certainly for a lot of people the smart way to go if you don't have to need the new car drive it off the lot experience.

Last year a good friend of mine got with the ucm at his store (he works at the store) and picked up a one year old 15K miles loaded Yukon xl slt-2 msrp $65K for $36K at the closed GM sale for his wife. It was an Enterprise executive driven program vehicle. Balance of bumper to bumper and slapped a 84 month Majorguard on it so he's covered for 7 years/70K miles from when he got it.

The benefits are if you do your homework you know if its been taken care of, its not a problem vehicle and not smashed up.

A good trade off when she schleps 2 grandkids around and like right now in snowy PA it is white coated with road salt. Heck even at retail which would have been about $45 ish its a great value. She's "rough on the equipment," and if the kids spill something or make sickies in it it's no big deal. But it's not new.

That being said I would never buy a used high performance vehicle unless I personally knew the owner. Most of the cpo Cts-v's for example are beat to death they just don't show it because of the low miles and the miracles of a good refirb. The stories I could tell about some of the one and 2 year old V's they've had would curl your hair....

Yeah, thinking back to when I had the GTO I wouldn't even leave it at a shop unattended. I was obsessive about not letting anyone drive it when I wasn't in the car because I babied it so badly. Luckily I'm self employed so if it meant spending all day pacing around a garage I could do so.

There was a great thread on the GTO site where an owner had left his car at a shop and when he got it back there were rubber shavings in the rear wheel wells. He was furious. Someone replied that he should "relax" because the car was built for burn-outs. I still remember the guy's response: "Well, your wife's vagina was built for sex. Would it be okay with you if her gynocologist boned her while she was in his office for an exam?"

Hahaa. Oh man, I still go over there but not that much. I do miss that forum when it was in it's prime. Good times.
