The size of the engine in the SS is the same as the standard Vette engine. However, the sticker on the Vette says made in USA while the SS states made in Mexico. Other than country of manufacturing, are the engines the same?

Bottom of the oil pan states made in USA. Not sure who had their hands on it last.

Same motor, no cylinder deactivation.

Not same engine, or at least not same generation of engine.
Corvettes run the LT1 new this year.
The SS uses the LS3 unchanged since 2009.
There are significant differnces between the two engines.

PS - motors run on electricity, internal conbustion devices are engines....

Standard Corvette engine is now LT1, with AFM (cylinder deactivation). Not sure where it's built.

Standard SS engine is LS3, without AFM. Made in Mexico and perhaps other locations. LS3 never has had AFM.

See this link for details:
Vehicle Engines Introduction

Go to right side of page, select 2013 or 2014 product guide--states all specs, including build sites, for each engine & transmission.

Window sticker for vehicle contains country of origin for specific major components (engine & trans) and provides "domestic content" information, but I don't know if that's a US-only rule, even if a vehicle is built in one country then sold in another--in other words, in the case of the SS, does "domestic" content mean for the country of manufacture (Oz) or where it's sold (US, in this case)?

Actually the automatic (L99) had AFM, I remember because it sounded like **** when it engaged. AFM was not available on the manual transmission.

well I didn't mention L99...and no reference was made by OP regarding Camaro variants.

that said, you are accurate, however, LS3 (standard in SS sedan with auto) is not L99.
If it's not an L99 what is it, because it definitely has AFM. Hence the 400 HP in lieu of the 425 HP of the manual.
Or I should say it is the L99.

The Chevy SS, Camaro SS M6, and C6 Vette (Base and GS) all use the LS3. The power rating is different based on intake and exhaust configurations, between the different models.

The LS3 and L99 are different engine variants based on the LS engine family.

The SS does not have AFM and is not the L99. SS comes with LS3.

In simplist terms, the L99 is a variant of the LS3 with the added AFM and variable timing. The only car that I know of that came with the L99 is the Camaro SS with the automatic. Camaro with manual has LS3 as mentioned before.

G8 GXP with auto has the LS3.

Totally agree!!! But we were talking about the AUTO.
Someone said, "...however, LS3 (standard in SS sedan with auto) is not L99."
I read that as saying the Camaro SS auto is not the L99. And I was saying it is the L99.
Confusing stuff.

I can't help it if you are having difficulty grasping this.

LS3 is the engine in question in original post - not L99

(vehicles fitted with LS3 in production)
- C6 Corvette - (stick or auto)
- Gen5 SS Camaro - (stick only)
- SS VF sedan - (auto)
- G8 GXP - (stick or auto)
- some Holden/HSV models

NO LS3's were fitted with AFM

No one ever mentioned Stingrays or LT1's either. The LS3 had AFM in the auto Corvette grand sport as well as the auto Camaro SS (select years). Not sure what your trying to grasp.

ENGINE: UNITED STATES
TRANSMISSION: MEXICO

Both shipped to AUS for assembly or assembled in Canada like the 2012 SS then shipped to AUS? :icon_scratch: Regardless, quite a bread crumb trail this car has left behind.

The L99 6-speed automatic transmission we are talking about is built at GM Powertrain in Ypsilanti, Michigan. Just sayin.

The L99 never was in the corvette period the trans for the SS is Mexican source and auto trans for corvette may or may not be US made looking for window sticker wife's not home she files everything in a black hole. Oh and I have owned 29 vetts, and 56 new cars so we will see.

I don't mean to be acting like TT C6--I'm NOT that stupid....

OP does not say 2013 or 2014 - in 2013, LS3 was built in Canada, with exception of dry-sump Grand Sport version. 2014 Corvette engines are built in US (NY). Only thing OP mentions is engine size, not whether it was LS3 or LT1 he was referring to.

As noted above, LS3 has NEVER had AFM. Camaro SS with auto has always been L99.
