Is Paying Retail or Above Retail for an SS Normal?

10880 Views 78 Replies 40 Participants Last post by  Charles
My company has an online Marketplace for getting discounts on everyday purchases. I used it 2 years ago to purchase our 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited which got me $3500 off retail. The average savings for car purchases on the site is over $3000.

Today I plugged in the information for a 2014 SS and got purchase prices from 3 participating dealers. One was $389 under retail, one was at retail and the last was $1631 OVER retail. I thought it was a mistake, but was told by my dealer that right now, many dealers are selling the SS for $1K - $2K over retail. Is this true or is he saying that to justify their asking price which is at retail?

It's a low volume specialty car. I know at the dealerships around here, they sell them pretty much at sticker. I got mine for around 4k off since I get employee pricing. I have seen C7 Vettes get more off then that.
I have seen $5k over.....

Any idea how low volume it is? How many were made for 2014? My dealer said that they got one and that is all they are getting. He said that many dealers aren't even getting that. I thought I saw somewhere that Chevy is going to up production to 4000 units for next year, but I am not clear on how many were made for 2014.

OK. So it is legal? I've never heard of a dealer asking more than what the sticker says. I am getting an education with this car :)
Less than one per Chevrolet dealership in the US, I believe there are north of 4000 dealerships and only 3000 of the SS will be provided for 2014. Some dealerships will get none, some will get one and some will get a few. Depends on the volume they do on certain models.
Paying sticker should be expected. I agree that paying 1k+ over sticker at this time is a little far fetched. If they call off the SS program tomorrow, then all bets are off.
As the US thaws out, I expect the sales of the SS to increase and leave fewer units to attempt to bargain on.
Given the car and what it offers, you are getting a deal at sticker and a steal at anything less.

It's a free market, they can ask anything they want for the car. Perfectly legal. I am willing to bet that less then half of the Chevy dealerships will even be getting one. We have sold at least 6 at my dealership and there are 2 more on the showroom floor. I know all the ones sold where I work were sold at retail, except for mine. Even if I didn't get the GM employee discount, I would have probably still bought the car.
Don't let the limited availability make you pay more than MSRP. Move on to the next dealer. No one is in a rush to buy this car except for us enthusiasts and there are plenty to go around according to a quick search on cars.com.

3300 hundred for 2014 production has ended for 2014. They will crank up for 2015 summer sometime.

Depends on the demand in your region. I specifically wanted green and paid sticker. Around here, there are tons of blacks and reds, I saw some reds being offered for $2000 lower than sticker.

Very True!

You do have some dealers that will not budge, though. There are 2 dealers in Los Angeles that I visited this past February that still have 3 cars each. They wouldn't deal on price at all, so I keep looking until I found one who would. Saved me quite a bit off MSRP.

Keep looking until you find something you can live with.

Good luck.

This is all great info. For the most part, the pricing I'm seeing in my area is consistent with what you are all saying. This is an eye opener and at least I know what to expect now when talking to the dealer. Thanks.
In addition to limited availability these are like the 5th Generation Camaros in the fact they have about $1000 mark-up from dealer invoice to MRSP (retail). Also there are ZERO rebates and I doubt Chevy will ever need to put on a rebate to sell these things. These are like the G8 GXPs, just with a much nicer interior and much more relevant tech options (HUD, bluetooth, back-up cam, nav, USB, A/C seats and the list goes on). My fav analogy for this car is a $25K less expensive CTS-V without the supercharger. For less than 25K you can mod the crap out of one of these and come waaay ahead.

No markups at my dealer. They may have even discounted one.

Discount

Mine was discounted about $1K. I thought that was more than fair, when I heard how rare these will be, I never even thought I would have a chance to own one. I thought they would all be sold before they landed. My dealer is only getting one and I got it.

I got $500 off sticker when I bought mine in November. That was here in Houston. I was surprised as it was one from the 1st delivery.
I was told that dealers who sell more Corvettes are allowed to buy more SS's. The orders are still very limited. I know some dealers out in the sticks are lucky to get one for the year. They will either sit on it and wait for it to sell, or trade it off to another dealer for something they need right now. The economy here in the Midwest is pretty lame, so this will hurt sales numbers. It's not that guys don't want these cars, but when your home value is upside down and your company is cutting jobs, a $50k performance sedan is not a smart option. -It's not stopping me from buying one! (at sticker price)

What dealer did you buy from if you don't mind me asking? I had Robbins give me a $500 certificate towards my trade-in just for walking in...then again, they didn't have any on the lot and the certificate was only good for that day.
Ray Chevrolet in Fox Lake still have two on their lot. They are both loaded with both options. They have them advertised at 1k off sticker online and will discount more.
