I was in the Chevy dealer a month ago just looking at a Camaro SS and the sales guy must have understood when I climbed out of the backseat and examined the trunk opening. He motioned to the white SS in the showroom and gave a brief explanation. I've been warming to the idea and trying to learn what this machine is.

I think I get it now after finding this forum and reading for hours. I went back and did the few blocks of test drive noting the firm ride. The sound of this sedan though! It's seductive. The car felt great during the short ride.

I have wanted an SS something my entire life. How much fun are you all having? Is it worth it in this age of global warming, peak oil concerns, gas prices, hybrids blocking the lane trying to not cause their engines to start during acceleration world?

The dealer has everything but mystic green all equipped the same - with spare and sun roof. My will power is breaking down.

For me it is/will be. I've always owned a performance car of some sort and will not have anything else. I don't care about mileage or gas prices...I've had worse. I can hardly wait until my situation is right for it.

What do you drive now?

It's every bit as fun as it looks. My story is similar, wanted an SS something with a big V8 my whole life, things never lined up. I would say in this day in age it is worth it, this car has no AFM or fancy sh*t really, it is a muscle car in the raw, it just works. I'm Lovin it.

Run it, My first SS was a 1964. Drove a 66 SS with a 396 and a big block 72SS. This is by far the best and most fun car (PBM, roof and spare) I have ever owned or driven. Wife loves it also. They haven't come close to convincing me on man caused global warming. The rest of it I could care less. I don't like the gas guzzlers tax but that sure as **** wasn't going to stop me. Might even let it idle more often out of spite. Buy it, you won't be sorry. Have fun.

I do not want a battery operated car or 4cyl running battery's the doomsday sayers are all nuts and are using political power to get there way a few nuts making everybody else dance the tune.
I hate high gas prices that are artificially made by these folks.

Oh love this car got of subject my eyes glazed over for a moment. It is not a 2 door coupe but today nobody can design one that the back seat can be accessed easily.
So for me this is as good as it gets. V8 sound no moaning six cylinder for me.

I'm driving a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 now but I'm at a point where I no longer need the bed of the truck and find myself frequently in places that have wonderful roads. Work takes me into the hills often. These are not go fast places to me but the handling of the car and getting on the freeway during off peak hours would seem to be much more rewarding. I've driven trucks forever.

Granted I don't have my SS yet but agree that it's loads of fun if you are a "car guy". My case may be different though. I think I'm safest being slightly faster than everyone around me. I have many years being much more comfortable on the road thinking this way. I can read traffic well and on road trips we used to play "what's that car gonna do". Anyway, I'm out of my element driving below the speed limit. When the traffic is really being stupid I need to sometimes get ahead of it. For this reason, and others, I cannot own anything less than a performance car. I test drove the Prius wondering if my practical side would win out as the gas mileage was appealing but it really stopped right there. The brakes were mushy and it didn't stop well, the handling and body roll was scary and the few accidents I have seen only confirmed that my family's safety is more important. It really bugs me that those looking for a car with great gas mileage don't consider something like the VW Passat TDI. Crap, it's 44mpg on the highway and it's a full size car that handles, has decent torque, and brakes so much better than a Prius. It just doesn't make sense.

That said earlier SS's or just about any American car didn't interest me as I 'needed' it to be a more solid all around ride. It had to handle, stop, and go with a smartly designed interior/exterior. I have two friends with 2008 Mustangs and although one of these guys babies his they both look like crap compared to my 2008 Legacy. They just don't stand the test of time well at all. I cannot and never could apreciate a crap for a car but with a big motor. No thanks... I'd only end up giving it away (after a little abuse for kicks I'm sure). Everything else it lacked would rub me the wrong way every time I had to look in the direction of the car. A bit dramatic but I'm definately opinionated if you haven't gathered that already.

The SS would be the second American car I have owned (I wish GM was reading this) and I'm really excited to not just claim to be a proud American but to very soon show it also with the car I'm driving also. This is the second American car that has it all. The first being the white Pontiac GXP I almost bought a few years back until the stealership sold it out from under me. So I have been waiting on the sidelines for what may be around the corner and the SS is it. It's fast (and as important, it can be made faster), it handles, brakes, and looks good inside and out (even better with the growing aftermarket). I was also loving the new Mustangs design but although I can get by with owning a coupe the back seats are all but unusable. Why did they have to do that?

I have test driven the SS and I'm sold. I'm hoping to buy one of the first 2015's.

Run it, the car will put a smile on your face every minute behind the wheel. That is certainly worth it.

Yes, it is that much fun. Not only to drive, but to talk about, explain to people what it is, heck, even to listen to and look at. The first time that I hand washed it I fell in love with the lines of the car. From the low and wide front end to the front fenders reaching way out to cover the forged rims and 180mph tires. The fit and finish is fantastic.
I too was in trucks for a long time. I always got the best available, my last being a 2012 Callaway SC540 Silverado. Loaded up, tons of power and cool as he!!. That truck doesn't even compare to this car. Your screen name should be what you tell the finance guy tomorrow.

I'm driving a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 now but I'm at a point in my construction career where I no longer need the bed of the truck and find myself frequently in places that have wonderful roads. Everything I need (computer, hand tools, small spare parts) fits in the SS trunk. Service calls take me to Malibu and into the Hollywood hills often. These are not go fast places to me but the handling of the car and getting on the freeway off peak hours would seem to be much more rewarding. I've driven trucks forever.
Me too!!!(mine is a 2003 Silverado...) I love it, 222,000 miles and I'm keeping it.

So, you're in the L.A. area...me too! I live in L.A. but work in Cerritos at the Chevy dealer there. Hopefully I'll run into you one day!

I drove just about everything out there comparable over 6 months. Mentioning gas mileage, guzzle tax, etc. had me at one point thinking 'was all this fun, size, and room worth the extra'. When thinking about the total cost the SS came in lower. The $4,000 more in gas over 5 years was more than off-set by the $10 to $20K more for comparably equipped cars. My insurance is lower, as one of the significant factors is the cost of the car. By the way, test drive a few cars that the sticker states 'fuel cost will be $0 above the average over 5 years' :). All this fun at a discount, and I was thinking definitely worth a premium.
Bought the Mystic Green, definitely mysterious, invisible, and loads of fun. Life is short.

For me, I traded a Camaro SS in on the Chevy SS because the honeymoon was over with the Camaro and I was getting bored with it. The new SS has brought back the Perma Grin every time I drive it. It's kinda cool having a car with that WOW factor again, with everyone stopping to figure out what it is. It's a SS what ?

First of I'm a huge car guy. The SS was a gift from myself to myself upon completion of grad school. I have been driving older cars that would get me A-B, because I couldn't afford anything good on a student budget. My last car was a 2011 Mazda 3 base model. My parents got it for me from a car auction (it was hit front and back). I graduated last May, got the job I always wanted and decided I needed a grown up car that still reflected my love of cars. I lusted after the G8 in grad school but I did not want a used car at this point. I waited for the SS after rumors it would be heading to the US. Now that I have it I feel very accomplished, I can cruise in comfort, or step on it let the engine roar and get a grin on my face. I almost always auto start it as I approach it so I can hear it growl as it starts up. I don't care about the gas mileage, it's worth it. My brother just got a honda insight, we both have different priorities. The SS IS that much fun.

Oh and this table was my second gift for myself. I always wanted something like the table that the Top Gear UK guys have. :)

Practical and batteries

"I test drove the Prius wondering if my practical side would win out as the gas mileage was appealing but it really stopped right there."

Drew,

I checked out a hybrid trying to give practical a chance and the video game of growing the vine and capturing all of the braking energy, while interesting, could not quiet the voice yelling "SS". I also read that hybrids do some polluting and using energy while battery ingredients are being mined and transported.

The TDI would have to be considered as an alternate to batteries.

I got a ride in a Tesla S P85 the other day. Amazing car with incredible performance. Don't mess with one of those in an SS unless they are far from home. The cost is incredible for a car that needs to stop more often and for much longer than you do. I have not seen a 100 amp fast charger at Applebee's.
