Installing a Holden Airbag

* I claim no liability towards any damage caused by those following this how-to.

First and most importantly, DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE. You do not want the airbag to discharge while you are working. If you want extra insurance and peace of mind you can also remove the airbag fuse.

To install the airbag is actually very straight forward and doesn't take long. All you need to do is lower the steering wheel to it's lowest setting and also fully extend it outwards. Now turn the wheel 180° (that's upside down), this will reveal three holes seen below.

The two outer holes are the ones you want to go after. Simply insert a slender item into there such as an allen wrench and pry outwards as the arrows depict. I recommend holding the airbag while doing this so it doesn't come flying out and possibly damage the wiring. While doing this I personally removed the steering column shroud, however it looks like that isn't necessary. If you do want to remove the steering column shroud follow these steps:
1) Remove the 7mm bolt in the center of the bottom steering column section.
2) Separate the two steering column cover shrouds by simply prying them apart.
3) Once the two pieces are separated, turn the steering wheel 90° in either direction. This will reveal another 7mm bolt holding the lower shroud into the column. Repeat this process for the other side. Now the lower steering column shroud can be completely removed.

Once you pop out the airbag through those two locations you can pull the airbag out completely. Here is what you are left with:

To remove the airbag wires you simply pull out the tabs as shown below and pull them off:

Now just plug in your new airbag and pop it into place. To put it in just simply line it up and press it in. If you removed your steering column shroud now is the time to reinstall it by reversing the removal process.

Finally hook up the negative battery terminal and you are finished! Enjoy your new airbag.

For those who have done the airbag swap, did you pull your airbag fuse, or go with just disconnecting the negative battery terminal only?

Thanks.

I installed mine last week and only disconnected the negitive battery cable. No problem during the five minute install or after reconnecting the battery.

Sweet....thank you. Swapping mine tomorrow.
Great info, but before I actually try to remove the airbag, can someone further explain how to disconnect its connectors? I'm doing the blackout trim swap.

It explains this in the very first post of this thread.
I read the first post, but this not clear how the electrical connections for the airbag are undone. Do they just pull out? Are we talking about the orange connectors in the picture on the airbag side?

Yes, the Orange plastic are holding clips that keep the yellow connector in place.

When look at the bag you will see they are are flush with the blue plastic. Simply pull them up (not off) and that will allow you to pull the yellow/blue electrical connector off.

Apologies if I've missed the details I'm about to add to the initial DIY post, but I don't recall any info on what size hex key wrench, or "appropriate sized tool", being mentioned, along with a photo of the springs being pried with said tool.

My confusion came in by thinking the springs to be released were the ones on the back of the airbag. Hey, I have no shame admitting I was ignert going into this...

I went in using a larger than needed hex key wrench. Finally got it using a 4mm hex key wrench.

Then once I realized what it was that I was aiming for to release, it became much simpler. I've added a picture of the "springs" that release the airbag from the steering wheel. Again, hopefully this isn't a redundant image and is helpful to others.

Thank you to all those that shared their experiences and picture, it took me about 7 minutes to get it swapped out, the pictures showing the spring positions was especially useful.

I've completed all the other black out trim except the steering wheel. I cannot feel anything to pry on in the back of the steering wheel. I have bottomed out a 4mm Allen key, a small Phillips head, etc. Just cannot identify what I'm supposed to be fishing for.

If you bottom out your tool, you went to far in. Look at the video closely, the first obstruction you hit should be the spring.

Took me an hour to get it the first time, subsequent attempts, about a minute to get both sides and popped out...

I would err on the side of caution. Unless the part numbers are the same, they probably differ. Just the safety advances of 5 years could have seen changes to size, shape, velocity, etc. I'd personally not take the chance unless there was evidence available supporting the interchangeability.
