“If you wanted to do that [build a second-generation SS] then this architecture [Alpha] could do that,”

straight from the horses mouth, that was quipped by Senior Engineer David Leone.

going with the Alpha platform instead of the Zeta platform found in the current SS has many advantages. Namely, the Alpha platform is significantly lighter, meaning greater fuel efficiency and dynamics. It also has more parts in common with other GM vehicles so there are greater economies of scale.
and the real gem, confirmation of continuation?

With the current model’s Holden plant in Australia scheduled to close no later than 2017, GM has around three years to develop the new model.

If it doesn't have a real back seat and road presence what's the point? You have the ATS and stretched CTS for that segment.... I really like the existing platform ...

Current Commodore is SWB Zeta. Current CTS is LWB Alpha. Commodore going Alpha probably means the end of the Caprice. And what about towing capabilities?

Too many questions, not enough answers.

Camaro rides on a short wheel base Zeta that is generally referred to as Zeta II.

Camaro on Zeta 1.5
Chevrolet SS is on Zeta 2.

However what was originally planned was for the Zeta platform to have been phased out a long time ago.

Basically Holden planned to have a shorter platform life for this current chassis, as compared to the third gen chassis that spawned four refreshes - VT, VX, VY, and VZ. The current Zeta chassis was supposed to have half the refreshes but also supposed to have half the life, and was planned to just have the VE and VF.

However, GM sucked Holden dry of funding to prop up its American brands during the GFC (profit from the hugely successful V-body chassis). Gm also diverted Holden funds for the Camaro and a few other cars that GM changed their minds on. The current platform was supposed to have been replaced by another in around 2011.

I think Camaro is also referred to as Zeta Lite. GM NA didn't so much as suck Holden dry for development of Camaro as Holden was the Home room for Camaro development turning the Concept into a production car, I acknowledge that all the top dog models were developed post Holden development in NA for NA .
What sucked with the Camaro program was that Holden had done all the development for RHD as well but tooling never got made I think due to the GFC.

There was also a whole range of Zeta products on the table, I don't know how far along each project was but Holden was to have had a 1 tonner, Crewman, Adventra (we ended up with Sportwagon), Monaro

There were also other products the notable one being the RWD Impala which ended up becoming the 2014 Impala FWD. By all accounts the RWD Impala was supposed to be gorgeous. RWD Caddy DTS or something similar but all projects got canned

I hear that, but it's contradicted by this link: Chevrolet SuperSport Sedan Coming in 2013, Wagon and Ute Body Styles Possible for Next Gen on Zeta II | Car and Driver Blog

Trust me, there is so much fail in that article its unbelievable. As said before, there is already a Zeta 2 on the market. The Zeta from the start is as flexible as the previous V chassis cars, and was made from the start to 1) be a 2WD sedan, 2) a 2WD coupe, 3) a ute, 4) a wagon, 5) LHD, RHD, 6) v6 and v8, 7) a one tonner 8) a LWB sedan, 9) a 4WD coupe, 10) a 4WD wagon, 11)and an AWD sedan and ute.

Holden has lost many sales because somewhere along the line, GM NA was able to decide for them not to go ahead with all these variants (variants already designed in the vehicle).

Holden's demise was really set in stone when GM America forced out (for whatever reason) Holden's old General Manager Peter Hanenberger and replaced him with a guy more interested in bringing in Cadillacs. I guess Peter is still out and about driving his custom Holden Monaro and Porsches in Germany.

The only way the Commodore will live on in RWD form is if people in Australia, New Zealand, North America and the Middle East send very clear messages to their local Holden/Chevrolet dealerships and keep sending customer feedback to Dan Ammann that they want this vehicle to live on in its current form RWD.

Monarocountry as Commodoreman2000 said you hit the nail on the head and it's true! Bob Lutz loved our Commodore/Monaro and had big things in store for it but as soon as Obama tapped him on the shoulder and he left its been down hill since then

Isn't the alpha platform more expensive than the current zeta platform? How much more do you want the spend on the SS?
as of now yes, but by the time 3 years are up there will be the ATS, ATS coupe, CTS, new CTS coupe and Camaro all paying back into it. Plus if SS becomes more aligned with CTS underneath then it actually becomes a cost cutting measure.

Its Akersons fault, hes a scumsucker. Lutz was always handcuffed by the bean counters...

From Peter De Lorenzo:

Akerson, of course, had Queen Mary in tow on his slow-motion, hackneyed victory lap of sorts at the show on Tuesday (today is the Unctuous Prick’s Last Day, by the way) because, in case you’ve forgotten, Akerson’s three-pronged (count ‘em) legacy that’s being crafted as you read this by his Chief Apologist/PR Bag Man Selim Bingol consists of the following: 1. Dan Akerson alone saved General Motors from itself. Nobody else. Not the True Believers in Design. Not the True Believers in Engineering. Not the True Believers in Product Development. It was Dan Akerson alone who saved GM and don’t you ever forget it. 2. He’s the Greatest GM CEO Of All Time, period. And 3. He’s the brilliant visionary who was singularly responsible for promoting a woman to be the first CEO of a car company. Not that she’s eminently qualified, of course, that’s beside the point, in fact. Mary Barra is as qualified to be CEO of GM as “Amway Bob” Ferguson – GM’s ex lobbyist - is to be running Cadillac. In Akerson’s twisted little mind it all made perfect sense, and he gleefully applied the same warped logic to both decisions in a malicious display of condescension the likes of which we’ll never see again. He did it, therefore he’s The Man. That’s all we need to know, right? Right. Good riddance, Dan, and have fun regaling your D.C. cronies on how you alone saved GM. Your sheer, unmitigated loathsomeness will not soon be forgotten.
Although with Mrs. Mary at the Helm we'll be lucky if GM even acknowledges they build an SS, I have bad feelings about the Generals future...

Sums up my feelings about GM. I've always loved their Engineering potential, but have been likewise saddened by their epically enormous Management bureaucracy. Too few real car guys also. Lutz was the Champ.
