I think I'm finally gonna pull the trigger on an SS

Hello. I've been infatuated with Holden Commodores all the back to the Pontiac G8. I like the SS even more. I have a history of sleeper cars and it's one of the main things that attracts me to the SS. Lately I've been seriously considering a fun/weekend/occassional track car. Have had one in the past but not for about 10 years. This past weekend I drove a 2008 Corvette (LS3) and also drove my first SS (black 2015 6M 37K miles). I feel in love with the SS. So I'm scouring the web looking for one. I realize they're hard to find but my preferred spec is 6M + Some Like Hot Red color. Anyway, happy to be here. Maybe I'll be posting pics of my SS soon.

Good luck in your search! Welcome to the forum
Welcome to the forum @XFactor
Good luck, I sure do like mine. In the 65K that I have on her, I have not had one legitimate factory defect. Not even with the somewhat dated NAV head unit. 🦕

Welcome to the forums and (hopefully soon) SS ownership!

do yourself a favor and spend time shopping. get a deal and dont buy on emotions. too many people are over paying for these cars (and others). wait for the right deal.

I agree with reddead, making an emotional purchase on a whim will get you in trouble. I've made that mistake on many an occasion. There are deals to be had out there. I saw that you had commented on @MN0024's listing, and his appears to be very clean for the mileage. He also seems like a great guy. Good luck with your search!!

That one on auto trader is number 3 of 5 as optioned, i own number 4 of the 5. The price was 50k a few weeks ago. I have located 4 of the 5 over the years, one was salvaged, one in Louisiana, this one and mine.

Welcome!
As others have said, there are good deals out there. I found mine in early '20 on Carvana of all places (delivered too!). Clean (title and garage kept), single owner 4.4k on the dash for $36.5k (Wish it was a manual, but my brittle shoulders will not allow it 😕). It took me about 9 months to find the right one. Good luck with your search!

Congratulations man! I'm very much in the same boat! I wanted the SS when it was initially on sale in '14-'17 but couldn't afford one at the time. Funnily enough, I found out one of my coworkers drove one after driving into work behind him and hearing his fantastic exhaust, and after test driving his last weekend, my mind was made up--currently keeping my eyes peeled for a relatively low mileage 6MT '16 or '17.

Don't discount the '15 if the right one pops up. Stiffest magride settings of all 3 years it was offered, driving lights, aux jack, CD player(I'm old), forged wheels...

Thanks @15SuperSport ! I’ll keep an eye out for a good one of those too—didn’t realize their was a difference in magride and the forged wheels. I don’t have any CDs tho ;)

I've never had one in my '15 that I got eight years ago, and I think I traded in my '14 with Pink Floyd Animals in the slot. 🙄

The magride was just a calibration deal, supposedly made more compliant in '16, not sure if it changed in '17.

Edited. And yes, '14-'15 had forged Alcoa's vs cast '16-'17
Thanks for all the support and advice. While I'm very excited to buy a SS, I'm usually pretty good about not making emotional decisions.

In order to make sense of the all the info from ads, I did what I always do....created a spreadsheet and assigned scores to weighted criteria. It then has a total overall score. This helps me determine which ones to pursue out of the dozens I've seen. Some of my criteria are color, manual, mileage, # of owners, sunroof. Each of those criteria are weighted based on how important they are to me, and all criteria totals 1. Bottom line, if I find the preferred color, manual with reasonable miles (30-45K), 1 owner and a sunroof, it would basically get a very high score and indicates one I should pursue.

I think I've found one and could be posting pics by the middle of the week.
  • Preferred color: keeping private for now, this one matches my preferred color.
  • mileage: 34,700
  • tranny: manual
  • # of owners: 1
  • options: sunroof and spare
  • negotiated price: $43,000
  • bonus: almost completely unmodded. Only mod is CAI and original parts are available.
Given that these cars are basically becoming collectible and with how rare the manual is, it might even be worth the same or more than I paid for in a few years (not that I'd be looking to sell it). I think it's a pretty rare car and rare situation where the vehicle actually may increase in value but that's not the main reason I want one.

I love your criteria process. I have a similar system as well.

Fingers crossed! Excited to potentially see some pics of this one once you buy it!
Well guys....I bought it! It's the one I mentioned before. Didn't want to jinx anything by revealing too much info too early. As of today, I am the proud new owner of this SS.

Specs:
  • 2017
  • Manual
  • 35K miles
  • Orange Blast
  • I am now the second owner. I even have the original window sticker!
  • Mods
    • CAI - knew about this before purchase from the ad pics.
    • Apparent tune. I learned today when meeting with the owner that he had a tune done "a long time ago" and it apparently "has been dyno-ed pushing close to 500 hp at the wheels". Honestly, I don't buy it. The car feels great and I love the way it drives and sounds but it doesn't feel like some 500 hp beast. There's a chip under the hood that I spotted and that's when he told me all this. I don't know how but I'd like to verify the supposed tune but that'll be a project for another day.
  • Options
    • Sunroof
    • Spare tire
So there you have it. I'm in the Pittsburgh, PA area and would be happy to meet up with other SS owners. There's a Car-N-Coffee event in Pittsburgh on Saturday June 3 that I'm most likely attending. So hope to see others there.

Hey @XFactor, if you don't mind sharing, where/how did you find this one? I'm looking on a lot of different sites (this forum, autotempest, autotrader, craigslist, facebook, cars.com, carvana, cargurus, etc.) but didn't see this one, so wanted to see if there was another that I should be adding to the list :)
