Hello all,

I have owned GM vehicles most of my life. For the SS, I noticed that even if I have the HVAC vent to "lower" (feet), that I still get airflow from the "upper" vents. It's kind of annoying because I'm used to much less (or no) airflow from these vents when they are not enabled.

BTW: I understand that some airflow is probably normal, due to the fact the the side window "defogger" vents probably need this airflow, but like I said I not used to so much airflow from the vents themselves.

Anyone else notice this?

Can't you just close up the vents with the little lever to stop the air flow from bothering you?

Some air flow is definitely normal. I don't think your SS is abnormal.
Of course, I could. The point of the post is that this seems different then any other GM vehicle I have owned.

Holy cow! The search function worked!

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I wanted to see if others were definitely seeing this problem. When I put the HVAC on manual and set the vents to "bottom", I still get air blowing from the left-most upper vent (left of the steering wheel). Yes I can close the vent, but defeats the purpose IMO. There's a "defogger" vent on the door, so it makes no sense to me why the upper vent would need to be on too.

Has anyone gone to their dealer with this as an issue to be fixed?

Hmmmm, this is something else I need to check as I haven't noticed it. Haven't needed the heat yet though, so that may explain. Won't be pleased if this is the norm though since I don;t like hot air blowing in my face.

Yeah - it's like this only when the heat is on. I first noticed it when I put the "Auto" mode to warmer than the outside this morning. But I also confirmed it when I put the HVAC to manual lower vents with high heat. Seems like maybe the vents aren't closing all the way?

Could be a temp/air door motor issue. Hope not - had to replace them often on the 2007 Impala SS and it was a pain. Sure it wouldn't be fun on the SS.

Mine always blow air no matter what. upper is obviously not near as strong as where you actually have it set but the upper always have a little air flowing. My cobalt was the same way so normal to me

Hey Martin, I still have two new HVAC "actuators" for when we owned two '06 Impalas, mine an SS and mom's an LT. I got good at changing them. I kept Rock Auto busy sending them. A lot of people didn't know you had to calibrate the darned things using a specific procedure. I can only imagine what the SS would be like.

I found a shortcut "hack" method on the internet to replace the two on the passenger side by going through the glove box. Still a PITA, but beat tearing the dash out -LOL.
A young guy with nimble hands & fingers probably would have had it a lot easier, too!
I actually had better luck repairing the internal gears with JB Weld. It would hold up better than the OEM replacements. Cheap plastic gears with a pressure sensitive cut-off switch when the door reached full open or closed equals a big "FAIL!"
I, too, still have a couple out in the garage - guess I can toss them now. LOL

BTW - Happy BD next Tuesday!! As they say "67 ain't so bad, just bad a**!"

I have the same issue. Even if the temp is set to "lo", and the air delivery to floor, very warm air comes from the top left vent.

Have you guys noticed that the center vent (closest to the hood ) on top of the dash also leaks air as well? I didn't see anyone mention that one. I assume it's strictly to defrost.

And why don't the vents adjust upwards more than they do? Very strange.

The fogger vent gets its air from "that" vent duct.
