HSVs heading to the US?

November 12, 2013
Matt Campbell

Report suggests higher-powered V8 Holdens could sell alongside Chevrolet SS in America.

A senior Chevrolet insider has hinted that HSV models may be under consideration for launch in the US market.

Holden’s limited export program with the new VF Commodore-based Chevrolet SS has commenced, and Chevrolet Performance Cars marketing manager John Fitzpatrick indicated to US site Automotive.com that more Australian-made derivatives could be offered if there’s enough demand.

“People say all the time, ‘Why don’t we have a six-speed manual? Why just one engine?’” Fitzpatrick is quoted as saying, before letting on that sales volumes are the key - only 3000 units are expected to be sold each year.

Fitzpatrick indicated that a manual version is expected to be offered, as well as more powerful versions of the car. There's no further word on Chevrolet versions of the Sportwagon or Ute models, however.

He said SS buyers won’t be put off by a higher price tag on higher performance models, which could potentially cannibalise Cadillac or Buick sales.

“They’re completely different kinds of cars for completely different kinds of customers.”

The current US-bound Chevrolet SS model is powered by an “LS3” 6.2-litre V8 engine with 309kW of power, which is teamed exclusively to a six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifters.

The locally-offered Holden Commodore SS has a 6.0-litre V8 with 270kW, while HSV’s 6.2-litre Clubsport can be had with 317kW, 325kW and 340kW power outputs, and the range-topping supercharged GTS has a 6.2-litre engine (dubbed LSA) with 430kW. No Holden or HSV models are offered with paddle-shifters.

The news comes about six months after Drive exclusively outed secret plans to offer supercharged SS models for the US market.

Holden product communications spokeswoman Andrea Matthews indicated there would be no hassle from Australia’s end if more powerful models were required by the US.

“Ultimately it’s up to Chevrolet to comment on what models they wish to sell,” she said.

“We’re very encouraged by the level of feedback we’re getting on the car.”

Andrews didn’t rule out a Chevrolet SS model expansion for the US market.

“We’re having ongoing conversations with Chevrolet,” she said.

HSV director of sales and marketing, Tim Jackson, declined to add anything further.

“We don’t comment on future products,” he said.

The reaction to the new Chevrolet SS has been a positive one, with the US $44,470 ($47,600) gaining positive reviews from new owners.

I'm thinking CAFE will become the potential fly in the ointment on this deal. If you think SS is restricted availability, wait until the HSV's come....but, at least that means there could still be a Sportwagon version!!!

Think about it--has there ever been a LHD HSV vehicle (does Middle East have access to HSV)?

If Callaway can do it, why shouldn't GM?

I know HSV (or Walkinshaw) own the CSV name for the middle east as they had built some cars for a one make race series. As for LHD HSV's I havn't the foggiest but will research.
I know there is one legitimately registered LHD HSV Maloo in the US though

The white Maloo at sema was used to promote the owners after market wheel business, it was built by a g8board member and sold to someone in Florida,

Their are two members doing conversions on g8board. one in Colorado (White Maloo) and Arizona (silver sportwagon)

Too good to be true

The only better news would be that Pontiac is back with muscle cars!
Just flat out sell the Holden's as is over here. And by the way, why are auto enthusiasts accepting the ridiculous hobby killing CAFE standards? I haven't seen or heard comment one on any site anywhere demanding we have gone far enough with this midget inspiring nutcase rule that is ruining the auto biz. I for one think electric cars are stupid and if an alternative option is WANTED, let it be natural gas. The conversion is simple and we are swimming in the stuff right here in the USA.

The new standards haven't really affected me any, other than paying a little more in GG tax. Also have to keep in mind, car enthusiast are in the minority and most folks just like a car to get from point A to point B.

Bill the way I see it they want to sell these cars but parts of the country have no stock while others have it and it's sitting. Get the cars here that folks ordered more on the highway makes for awareness of product. The cost of the SS was a problem for some to much so the HSV cost should bring on heart attacks and binge drinking for some of this crowd.
What do you think maybe 1500 or less state side and they want to sell. They talk about never making the numbers with the G8 no advertising and going bankrupt and closing out Pontiac nobody in the general public wants an orphan car.
You know where I'm coming from I stay on top of stuff and just by accident found out about the G8 back in February 09.

Doug, I hear you--I'm just the messenger...much as I'd love to see HSV cars become available here.

GM President NA is talking now at Detroit, as I write this, and just mentioned Z/28 ($75K), coming Z06 (price TBD), and even the SS sedan as indicators of the success being enjoyed--the way I see it, if there's a way to promote the product, and GM/Chevy is really pounding the media about their clean sweep with Corvette and Silverado (in spite of the big recall) as NA Car & Truck of the Year, the only concern I'd have is whether the marketing folks can really handle so much success--at the corporate and dealer levels. Hate to say it, but they've been down so long, it's a real problem, IMO, and many dealerships really don't know what to do or how to handle a different class of buyer.

Yes, price point is a major issue--when Chevy is supposed to be at the bottom of the pricing structure at GM. The enthusiast market could easily turn elsewhere, but I'd like to think the image of Chevy selling HSV cars as something to consider for those with Audi/BMW/Mercedes (and other brands) pocketbooks or aspirations who possibly would take a chance--but I still fall back to the way this will be dealt with by corporate marketers and dealers, where I'm afraid there will be some dissatisfaction from conquest buyers who are used to having their fannies powdered after going to the "loo".

That's where this good will and halo of success lives or dies--can Chevy play in that arena?

Place your bets......if you dare!

I will just add...I think it's quite apparent what a BARGAIN the SS sedan is in comparing it to it's competiton--even though $45K is a bunch of money in an environment where the average new car sale is in the $30K range, which is where people expect a Chevy "family car" to sell. OK, go get an Impala....and it doesn't help that the source of SS & HSV product is going away in 2 more model years, so that may be the REAL stopper to an HSV conquest of NA.

I agree.

And people have bought into the brand status marketing.

An example from 1980:

My neighbor across the street just passed the Bar and opened up a huge fancy cherry wood paneled office in a high rise downtown Philadelphia office building with a large staff.

His wife drove a new Riviera. His 'beater' while in law school was a new 280Z. I'm outside and he pulls up in the biggest most expensive BMW sedan. Of course I go over to check it out. It was nice. Then he says he has to get gas because they don't fill them up hands me the keys and says "you drive because you can appreciate it. I don't, I just got it because I had to to 'fit in' with my lawyer buddies and clients." And when we got back his wife was waiting outside all kinds of pi**ed off because I got to drive it first.:sadViolin:

This is most people now, even the ones surviving on 3+ McJobs. No offense to anyone intended.

This is why Hyundai and now Kia are not selling their top of the line 'supersedans' in anything but puny numbers. They are awesome if you have ever seen them and the price is true value in that class. But they have the wrong badging ..... no perceived snooty status symbol image.

This is why the average BMW, Audi, Benz and Jaguar owner would never even think to look at a 'pedestrian' Chevrolet no matter how good and what a great value it is.

For my kind of thinking I will be snooty about my soon to be in the driveway SS. I'm practicing my "you paid how much for that (fill in blank here) ... and it doesn't even park itself?

Just like I laugh at the Escalade owners (again, no offense intended it it's your cup 'o tea) when I park next to them in my '11 Yukon SLE (I like cloth and don't like sunroofs) carefully optioned and stickered for less than $46.3k and paid for. 95% the same and $25K less minimum. Rides better too on the 17's than the 20's or 22's.

I take pride in an intelligent purchase where you get true value for money.
