I removed the automatic shift knob thinking that the C7 shift knob and assembly would fit - so I ordered the C7 knob and boot - and it does NOT fit!

The retaining clip is in a different spot - and the top of the gear selector shaft is different between the vehicles.

So the knob will not fit properly or work....

To the how to:

1. Remove the rubber tray that is in front of and behind the shifter assembly.

2. Pull up on the rear of the black surround that goes around the shifter assembly to release the 2 rear pins.

3. Remove the 2 silver painted trim panels that connect the floor console to the dash - pull from the inside of the console toward you.

4. Pull up on the black surround to release the 4 remaining pins - remove black surround.

5. Remove the chrome shifter assembly surround - there are 2 pins in the back that you need to release with a small screw driver. With the back pins release you should be able to pull the front out as well.

6. Use a small screw driver to release the boot pins that retain it in place - between the leather boot and the flat black surround - put your screw driver in the 4 corners - you should here a click and the shift boot will release .

7. Pull the shift boot up - and there is a clip that holds the shift knob to the gear select shaft - remove the clip - and pull the knob upward - now you can remove the knob.

8. Reverse the instructions and put it all back together.

Sucks that it doesn't fit, I really like the red stitch - though I prefer the stitching pattern of the SS knob.

Yeah much better stitching pattern on the Chevy SS, and it could be just me but does the chrome look better on the SS as well?
That as well, had forgotten to mention that. The overall shape and design of the top trim is nicer on the SS. As a matter of fact, the only thing I like about the C7 knob more than the SS is the color of the stitching. :lol2:

In my C6 - T56 - you move the chrome ring - and pop the boot down and take the screw out.

In the VF - you have to take it apart from the bottom - pull the boot up - and take out the pin - just like the How-to says.

Thanks that's almost as bad as taking the windshield out to replace the heater core yikes.

I'm interested in this too. My cap has a scratch in it (I think it was delivered that way, but don't remember).
Yes, just gently pry up on it and it pops out. Just be gentle so you don't break the little clips on the underside.

Umm, no threads according to post # 1 and the drawings. Slip fit with retaining clip on the auto.
Another thread shows slip fit and thru-bolt retainer on the manual.

Has anyone just switched the horribly cheap looking boot on the auto shifter? This is by far the weak spot in the interior, visually. I've seen other cars replace it with a Crown Royal custom boot made from the bag that comes with a bottle, cool idea but I don't drink anymore.
