I have faith that the SS will be a 3 year model run, so dont go around screaming with your hands in the air. However, its sucks that this will in fact be the last Australian built Holden we will ever see in the U.S.

Well that sucks, but hopefully GM will follow through and manufacture the SS and Caprice here in North America by 2016. However it will still not be as cool as having an Holden from Australia.

So if they do start making them here, they will be shipped back to Australia as a Holden?

I heard an interesting talk this morning on ABC radio saying that Chinese manufacturers like Geely & Cherry would give almost anything for Holden's expertise. I wonder..

This is a very black day for Australia. Holden was much more than a car manufacturer, it provided an engineering career path that spread far beyond cars and established Australia as a leader in hi tech engineering. That is now gone. This government's incredibly short sighted stupidity will go down as the one that opened Australia's door to the third world. It is beyond belief that they encouraged this.

End of a career...

At least tomorrow I finish my Associate Degree of Electronic Engineering with Merit.
I am probably going to have to turn my back on my colleagues and abandon ship, lest I be left fighting with thousands for scraps. RIP Elizabeth -the new Detroit.

Perhaps the new CEO will take her engineering, HR, product and purchasing background and use them all to correct this decision.

Don't doubt for a moment that China won't have a part in the fallout from this situation....GM exists at the pleasure of the Chinese, as market dynamics dictates Asia as their new global focus, after all. Detroit is now merely an outpost, and the players there--Akerson, Barra, Reuss, et al, are window dressing for domestic consumption, there to keep people actually interested in owning a "new GM" global product.

I'm not sure I comprehend the need for government subsidy participation to keep domestic auto design & manufacturing in Oz, but it definitely should be a further object lesson for us here about the level of government involvement in ANY industry--and what happens when that industry becomes reliant on support FROM a government that has it's own interests ahead of private enterprise--we are seeing the results clearly in the Ford & Holden meltdown(s)--just as another industry--"health care" as we have known it--is being decimated here in the US, as a result of government action.

....it should not have come to this
Indeed, and that is the saddest part of the whole thing....

Boy do I agree with this our only hope now is that they move production to alpha and the USA. Sales may suffer because who wants an orphan car not again GM. Quality may suffer ie no one wants to give it there all if at the end of the day there job is gone. I've seen GM use the carrot and stick to often to get workers to work hard and turn out good product only to be cut of at the knees in the end.

It does make me worry about buying an SS post-announcement. Will the workers continue to put their best effort in building the car? Hmm...

Just y'all wait until the General starts scaling back US manufacturing, if not borderline abandonment. how long do you think GM can really afford to pay American manufacturing wages, especially with the UAW sharpening their teeth again after a few docile years.

With the treasury divesting themselves of GM, bye bye lifeline. Manufacturing in SE Asia is just too profitable for them to pass up a large scale strategy based out of that region.

It is indeed a sad day, not just for you career Holden boys but for all auto enthusiasts...

I wouldn't go that far...
Bit too much pride in their excellent work to leave that type of lasting impression. Worked FOR and WITH GM for nearly 40 years and last saw that kind of activity in the 80's when the US market was very unstable with plant closures and such. High quality comes from Holden today and expect that will continue through closure in 2017. I will likely order a late 2016 or early 2017 SS as a keeper.... I doubt we will see the current platform beyond 2017.

The Australian government already gave I think close to a billion dollars to Holden in order to try to keep it here. Some were calling for more government assistance, but in the end Holden still would have had to shut down in Australia eventually. It just doesn't make sense to build cars in Australia for export to other places. Too much money spent on transport.

It will have serious repercussions for Australia's economy though. All those auto workers are going to have to find something else to do.

You do realize that Japan manufacturing is done in this country from imported parts. There labor cost is less because there work force is younger and no retires.
Wages is not the issue developmental cost is among other factors.
Unless you have had some schooling on this and I have in class rooms. You are speaking out of turn. I saw the break down as to the percentages of each item.
