Fitzpatrick said that Chevrolet would definitely be interested in at least looking into bringing over the manual transmission and more powerful versions.

I couldn't help but smile when I read this...

"When General Motors announced that it would be bringing the Australian-market Holden Commodore back to the U.S. as the 2014 Chevrolet SS sports sedan, many cheered. But more than a few enthusiasts deep in the fringes of the GM fanboy world scoffed."

My mind automatically added, in an ornery voice... 'It needed an M6, AWD, and a $35,000 price'.

Got to love this article, another part aside from the above stood out to me, and restores some hope in what a lot of us wanted:

If the program proves successful with its modest sales goals, Fitzpatrick said that Chevrolet would definitely be interested in at least looking into bringing over the manual transmission and more powerful versions. Our 2014 Chevrolet SS, he says, is more or less a loaded-up version of the Holden Commodore SS-V performance version. GM wanted to keep variations down to keep profits up, at least initially, and says shipping constraints have limited the numbers currently entering the U.S. Still, the first ships from Australia have set sail for the States.

... and how many times did we hear the ute was a possibility?

An HSV variant would make it easily into the current CTS-Vsport $$$.

CTS-Vsport 3.6L Twin Turbo Engine MSRP Starting at $59,995
CTS-Vsport Premium MSRP Starting at $69,995

The HSV's are pricey; really nice but pricey.

Good point. WHY even consider it when you can have a beautiful CTS-V. I rather have it over the SS, the new generation is amazing.

The new CTV-V is still a year plus off if there is ever going to be one.

The ATS-V ... maybe a little less than a year from now.

I have yet to drive the new CTS-Vsport and I am betting it's awesome for what it is but I'd rather have a less highly strung and overstressed powertrain .... like an LS3 and no AFM or VVT.

For my money and for what you get I ordered an SS instead of the CTS-V sportwagon I had been planning on. Heck, in the real world I'll beat 99.44% of the other cars on the road in a red light grand prix with the SS just as easily. 0-60 in 4.8ish or less ... how fast is fast enough?

Yes the outgoing CTS-V is awesome so if have to want one new better order it PDQ!

Remember when comparing pricing, the HSV GTS when sold in Australia attracts a 33% luxury car tax which would not apply elsewhere.

Price: $92,990 plus on-road costs (AUD) = $87,262.77 USD

If the above included the tax it would equal $58,465 USD without it. Maybe one of the guys here that understands this can fill us in?

Also, take off another 10% for the local gst (sales tax) and make it $52,357.66. I don't know what benefits arise out of the free trade agreement between the US & Australia but I assume it must be something. I also don't know what taxes apply in the US.

So in Australia all the taxes are included in the price quoted by the mfg except for the registration costs???

Not sure where GM are on this zeta platform for Australian production. Seems, as usual media reports, Elizabeth plant may shut down and all zeta for US customers produced in USA 2015/2017.

In any case, the Gen V power train is just getting stronger, min 450HP for 2015 SS as per Corvette LT1 today. 500+ for special variants?? Its looking good all round for a premium 4 door for years to come.

Correct. Sales tax, or gst, is uniform across Australia so all taxes are included in the RRP. Registration is not included because it does vary from state to state.

Jat63 is right. The 33% tax applies above a $60,316.00 threshold, not the whole amount as I applied it. Not as cheap as I thought.

If GM decide to close down Aussie manufacturing they will still continue production here in Australia until around October 2016 (about the same time as Ford Aus ceasing), maybe a little longer but that date would cover 2017 model year Chevrolet SS. I don't listen much to the media as they seem to have there own agenda on this subject I feel (that and all the negative press sells papers) I will only listen to anything directly put out by Holden or the Industry minister.

The Caddy's have less interior space than the SS. If you are hauling baby carriers or child seats the seats in the Caddy in the rear are shorter that's a problem my kids have.

Very true. The CTS-V is a smaller car than the SS. My friend has one and I feel like I am sitting in an M3 or C class, very small.

That is the only reason for me to consider the SS, full size family car, full trunk space, rear seat access plus full power train HP. That in my mind is the value proposition very hard to beat and why I consider the new Gen V lineup will ensure this product remains competitive.

The one drawback that I may have missed is the rear seat fold down and trunk access. I like the 40/60 split in my current 2008 SS and use that feature frequently but I did not read any comment on this for the 2014 SS. Any feedback?

The SS has a pass through so no 60/40 split. Unless they send the wagon which does. If you have seen the G8 pass through it is the same deal.
It can be pain in the butt but on the flip side makes for a more rigid structure which in my mind makes for a better performance sedan body structure.
