this isn't really news to anyone who has been on this forum long enough, but now automotive media like autoguide is start to report on it:

General Motors might have already come to a final decision about the future of its vehicle manufacturing operation in Australia.

Currently, its Holden subsidiary operates three manufacturing facilities in the country that have been propped up by previous government subsidies. The current coalition is less willing to help keep the company alive and earlier in the year, the company said it would halt production without renewed government support.

A new report suggests that GM will choose to pull the plug as early as 2016. An announcement was expected this week, but has been postponed until early next year.

If Holden stops building cars in Australia, it will mean the company shifting roles from being a domestic producer to a company that imports re-badged products. Currently, it sells a version of the South Korean-built Chevroelt Spark, Malibu, Volt and Cruze among several others.

Chevrolet just began importing the SS sport sedan to the U.S. with very little marketing. The full-size sedan is essentially a re-badged version of the VF Commodore that is also being used as the brand’s new Sprint Cup car.

Hmmm .... Wonder if they will move the SS to the Lansing plant when it comes online ? If sale are good that is. I know the Camaro will be going there for the 6th Gen. It's suppose to be housing the rear wheel drive cars, except for the Vette.

If Toyota pullout Holden is gone, they can't support the supply industry on their own, the only way will be to bring everything in-house.

Of the three Toyota has the most au content, cruze has the lowest.

From what I can gather this is all speculation with no substance.
If the decision is already made why are they allowing the productivity commission, with an interim report due Dec 20, to continue with their work and waste everyone's time & money?
If the Australian central bank's policies to reduce the value of the $A continues to succeed ($A1.00 today = $US0.91), Holden should return to profitability sooner than later.
Why would the government throw out the baby with the bath water, along with 250,000 jobs? I see a game of brinkmanship in progress and assistance will eventually be forthcoming. Especially given the recent resurgence of people buying large cars.

The problem Australia seemed to have during the GFC was that it was too strong, coupled with countries like Japan for instance manipulating the value of their currency and many other factors.
I was told today that a decision may come as late as April on Australian Manufacture. Why would Mike Deveraux participate in the Procuctivity Commission next week after yesterday addressing employees on the shop floor about the state of play with no decision being made.
Just watched the news and Mike Deveraux has assured the SA State Premier, the Industry Minister and also the Union as such.
The Industry Minister is now calling for the so called Senior Government Minister who supposedly said Holden would close in 2016 to be named

GM does this a lot telling everyone its going to be okay. They than move that Person out and send in the person who is going to get the blame for the shut down.

Gm has always earmarked holden for closure, even before the GFC. GM's inability to properly position holden products in America especially pairing them with a dead man walking Pontiac meant a lot of wasted Holden resources and money
Everyone in Australia knew what was going on and GM's play when every holden CEO in recent years were all from GM America.

Honestly i don't think the government should waste any more money on Holden, when its parent company GM is intent on closing shop. Toyota has by far handled itself far better

Hasn't mike d been appointed in another position in ? It seems that he is moonlighting as a Holden CEO. Speaks volumes when the person heading the company has another position and.when he.doesn't even live and work in Australia/Holden anymore.

a sad situation

Holden has so much more to offer, but GM seems to be on a path that leaves no chair at the table for it.....now is not the right time to abandon ship due to the "global financial crisis", for a manufacturer that could easily lead Oz back to a better economic position, given less government and union interference and a shot at the "world" market.

I don't advocate war, but it's amazing to look at Detroit & Nagasaki in 1945 and then compare them today....

I intend no offense to anyone by my comments - just wish there was a solution other than what is before us now.
