Forum bros,

I need some help. My buddy with the Camaro 1LE told me that when he first got his car, he used up all the crappy fuel that comes from factory, put premium fuel, and then pulled the ECM fuses overnight to reset his ECM to adjust to the higher octane fuel.

I do think that from factory, they only have one crappy fuel pump with probably 85 or 87 octane. Because of this, the ECM adjusts timing and so forth to work best with this crappy fuel.

Can anyone confirm this or give some insight? Thanks!

Assuming that the SS has a similar or the same ECM calibration as the G8 GXP then it will have a "low octane" and "high octane" timing table just like my G8 GT and will bounce between the two tables depending on the octane that you're running.

Some have said that you need to run about 3 tanks worth of the higher octane through the car before it will move back to the high octane table.

Others have said that simply disconnecting the battery for several minutes will reset this.

Others, like me, have simply copied all the settings from the "high octane" table to the "low octane" table using tuning tools such as HP Tuners or EFI Live so that we now have one set of timing parameters and it can't bounce back and forth. I'm currently setup with a 93 octane tune. I've found that it will still run on 87, but if I start going WOT, I will get engine ping/knock which would be expected. I found this out by accidentally putting the 87 in it. As long as I continued to drive it easy, the knock didn't surface. I just had to run it low and put some good old 93 back in and I was good to go again.

This affected 2010 and 2011 Camaros for the most part. There was even a technical service bulletin put out regarding the fuse pull. The early L99's weren't switching back to the higher fuel table and it was found that pulling #5 and #20 reset the ECM allowing it to jump back to the higher table when the appropriate gas was found. This didn't seem to affect the LS3's as much but I did it within the first week with my LS3 Camaro for peace of mind. If the fuses are set up the same in the SS it certainly wouldn't hurt but GM was aware of the issue so I would think it wouldn't be an issue with the new SS.

I believe our cars come with 5 gallons of aus fuel at 93 octane. I drove to shell with the dealer on my first fill up and put in 91.

That is correct. 18 liters is close enough. And the odor that comes from the Aussie fueled exhaust has me wondering what in the world is different in this gas??? While watching the parade of cars at Benicia we could smell the exhaust. Maybe it was all the seaweed. LOL

No, their gas definitely smells different than ours. That is one of the major things I noticed while in Sydney a few years ago!
