DISSAPOINTING TRACK DAY Pt.2

I arrived at the track (Kil-Kare) in Xenia ,Oh. about 5:15. The air temp was 70,low humidity , fairly strong cross wind, unsure of DA. Track is usually well prepped with good traction. Both my 2011 and 2014 Mustangs did 1.7 60' times with an occasional high 1.6 so this car felt (and was)slow.

First run was best of 5 at 13.036 and 111.19, down hill from there. I tried both TSC ON AND OFF. All runs were in drive as I did not use paddles. Traction did not seem to be a problem, torqued it each run and car ran straight with no fishtailing or loss of traction I could feel. Seems very flat on launch which 60' times show. Did burnouts and car seemed like it wouldn't break tires loose but after what seemed like an eternity it would rev and smoke them? I did run five times in an hour which is why first time was the best. I did beat a new Ford Sho,2013, BMW 750 he thought was 480 HP,2013 V-6 Mustang and 2011 GT Mustang. Remember the car dynoed 394 on Livernois dyno last Thursday.
TIMES are average of five runs.
60' 2.12
RT 0.15
1/8TH 85.65
1000' 99.56
E.T 13.14
Spd. 109.04

I was hoping for times in 12.8 range and speeds in 113-114 range ???
Gives you times for comparison and a few thoughts!

What time of day were your runs?

That 60' time is comparable to my 60' time in my G8 GT with 22" wheels on it. On Drag Radials I managed a 1.83 on the G8 with the 2.92 rear gear and stock stall. I'm hoping for some 1.9s tomorrow when I go.
My son ran his G8 GXP last year in Wisconsin and had better luck just scuffing the rear tires vs. a full burnout to heat them up. He picked up a tenth...

The only other suggestion is the car learns your driving behavior as you go along. Maybe next time disconnect the battery for 15 minutes so the various systems forget what you told them. Then rip it down the track several times!
I'll be taking my car back to the track on the 26th, I had only taken it once in the past. Best first time out was a 13.228 @ 108mph with a 2.1 60' in some muggy Florida weather. I want to see what I can muster out best while stock and then start modding, I want to crack the 12s stock - I just have to have the weather cooperate.
I've been running down the 1/4 mile since 1977 using nothing but street vehicles. There are A LOT of variables to deal with which determine how well you & your vehicle perform, air temp, air density, track altitude, track temp and condition, track prep, your vehicles tire condition, tire air pressure ,tire compound, driver experience even your own attitude comes into play.
How much experience do you have? I suggest not to be upset but to get used to your new car and vary your launch .
Some of my cars wanted to be power braked for best 60' results, others actually went slower with this method.
I've met inexperienced drivers that just kept pouring $ into their vehicles to improve results instead of gaining more experience first.

Practice, practice, practice.

Steve is 110% correct. I must have 4-500passes at the track. It takes practice to be consistent and to get good times.

With all the passes I did in the G8, I'm starting with that experience under my belt and I'm going to try the SS like I'm still in my G8 with more power and a better rear gear.
Even if you are not using the shift paddles (A/S, or Active Select mode), you should have the transmission in Sport (S) mode.

Page 9-24 in the manual:

Sport Shift Mode
Sport Shift mode can be selected where maximum responsiveness is required.
When operated in Sport Shift mode, the transmission will delay upshifts and allow earlier downshifts. In addition, the transmission can sense enthusiastic driving, at which point it may delay upshifting and downshift earlier when braking. This is designed to maximize vehicle performance.

Normal Shift Mode
Normal shift mode is recommended for normal or freeway driving, as it provides optimum fuel economy. When the shift lever is moved to D (Drive), normal shift mode is selected.

Also, try setting the Stabilitrack to Competitive mode. Do this by quickly pressing the Stabilitrack button two times. Page 9-31 in the manual.

For what it's worth, I haven't had this car at the track yet. Just speculating.

From the shift mappings I've seen on the 6l80, "D"rive starts in 2nd gear and "S"port starts in 1st gear. Make sure your using Sport, in order to Enable the "PAS" system in the trans.

If this is true it help a lot but why does it start in 2nd?

I wonder how my car will do on fuel in D, I always drive in Sport and average 16.2mpg with all city driving. I'll be filling it up tonight, but I am going to the autocross tomorrow which will kill my average.

I read that the transmission starts in 1st the first time you shift into drive and thereafter starts in second from a dead stop. I forget if that's in sport or regular drive mode but I think I remember it's both.

The reason why it starts in second is for fuel economy just look at the ratios which also explain why the first run was the best.

I've tried both torquing it up then launching and launching from an idle and my best times have always been from idle in sport mode.

According to Dragtimes, Kil-kare had a DA of 1329 around 5:00 and 1286 around 6:00 yesterday. Not the best DA but not too terrible. Getting that 60' down will help a bit. Did you drop any air out of the rears?
I didn't realize car started in 2nd,I knew it does when in sport if you don't kick it down to first. That would be a big difference, thinking now that is what it felt like. I will try again next week.

If you got those numbers starting in 2nd then next week will be happy times for you
With my 2009 G8 GT that had the Roto-Fab & Cortex Tuner I managed a [email protected] - This SS has a ton more power than my GT did. Sooooo, that along with a better 3.27 rear gear I'm hoping for some good times tomorrow.
Your best mph of 111 says there's a 12 in it. We've all had slow days, don't let it eat at you unless it keeps happening. Sometimes it's as simple as the track's timing system playing up, it's not unheard of. Regardless, I'd put a few more miles on it and have another crack. If it happens twice I'd start questioning the tune.
Based on everything you have posted I think you will see 12's but I do believe the majority of SS owners who occasionally drive a quarter mile at a time will be in the low 13's.

what he said ^^^ agreed! at speed it should be in the 12s.

but then again like people said it could be because of the mode you were in. i haven't looked into those claims but that could be one answer.

BUT ideally always remember you can have all the horsepower in the world and if you can't get it to the ground it means nothing!

my least hp car in my Barn runs the fastest 1/4 times period! ;) that tells you something.

Sounds like it has a weight advantage to me, busted.
