Just got my new Consumer Reports magazine yesterday. They rated a bunch of different black trim cleaners/restorers and tested them over multiple washing, sun, wind, rain exposure.

These included the usual suspects... Mothers Back to Black, Turtle Wax, Meguiars Ultimate Black, Wipe New, Re Nu, etc.

The only two they recommend and can be seen in the picutes as the only ones still working are:

Wipe New and Re Nu - all others faded and required multiple recoatings - these two did not.

Did they rate one over the other? Planning to apply this weekend while everything is still clean and new. Did they say anything about contact with paint? I want to do the black strips that run along the roof.

Adams super VRT works great for this as well. It made my dads gray trip black and has not turned gray again. Best stuff I have ever used for trim, black plastic, tires.

I'd like to point out that the two that performed the 'best' in those tests are different from the others in that test. These are two completely different product categories and consumer reports doesn't mention this fact.

The normal cleaner/grease stuff like back to black / meguiars is more of a maintenance item. It's something that you are supposed to apply every month or so.

The other two that performed 'the best' operate entirely different. They create almost like a clear coat over what they are applied to. They are more of a sealant, and if a sealant is what you want there are much better brands out there IMO that also give you more value for the $.

For instance -

I realize to the average consumer reports idiot this nuance doesn't matter as they just want to restore their black trim. ... But to those of us that are intelligent enough to appreciate the difference it matters.

This would be like testing how long certain brands of 'wax' last and saying one brand of wax which is carnuba based (like Dodo Juice) doesn't last as long as a synthetic wax / sealant (Like Meguiars Ultimate) but not mentioning that key piece of information. Obviously the Meguiars ultimate will provide a longer lasting shine then the dodo juice, but it's a completely different type of product and is intended to be used differently.

After reading the original post I bought the ReNu Pro. It looks like jet back syrup and will stain anything it comes in contact with (which is why it comes with rubber gloves in the package). I have tried some of the others, and ReNu is my new favorite for restoring black trim.

Funny, always figured stuff that advertised on TV was kinda crap. Luckily not too much trim like this on the MY15 cars, but I have a Ford Ranger XL that would love to have this stuff on it.

I have used the Wipe New and it works reasonably well.

It does not last forever, but may be 2 years.

After application, you can NOT get it wet for several hours. This includes a heavy dew. So it helps if the vehicle is in the garage.

You must wear gloves.

The only one I use if its a trim semi permanent coating it's Solution Finish, it's the best. It does what it says and it lasts a long time and very affordable.

For newer cars, we just protect all the trim from the get go, with a good trim coating for the Ultimate protection.

I`ve been consistently using "Turtle Wax" Spray wax for 30 years and never had any ramifications from using it on all my cars. Many compliments from people how my cars shined. I can spray it on anything and everything and always works well for protection and shine. Black trim always looks better as well.
