The 2014 Chevy SS has been included in the 2014 North American Car of the Year long list. Last year's winner, the Cadillac ATS, is not included on the list, but Cadillac has hopes still with the CTS and the ELR. The automakers with the most entries on the list are Chevrolet and Kia with 5 entries each.

The long list will be trimmed down to about 12 vehicles in the Fall, once all 50 jurors have had a chance to drive everything. This list will be narrowed down again to the top 3 before the winner is announced at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show.

What do you think of the list? Does the Chevy SS have a chance of taking home the big prize?

I'm just saying... wouldn't it make more sense to base that assumption on an actual test drive first? Not to say you are, but I wouldn't assume all BMWs are great or any car for that matter until I've driven it. For example, I'm not impressed by the new 5-series, the last generation was much better in terms of driver feel/connection.

If a dang Kia gets it over all the others on this list that will mark the beginning of the end.

Being an Aussie I'd love to think the SS could cut the mustard. With all the competition and especially the new CTS on Alpha plus I would lean toward that one.

So long as a GM product gets it I aint biased at all :D

What sort of criteria do they use when coming to a winner? Bang for buck, Chassis dynamics etc?

They consider everything. Usually its something that really pushes the envelope or offers substantial performance or value for the money. The SS doesn't have much chance - its only a refresh (a good one mind you) of a platform that is already getting up there in age.

My short list is:
Corvette
CTS
CLA
Mazda 3
Mazda 6

and from what i have seen in the past, these refreshes don't do too well especially when put up against completely new cars that are in a way, ahead of their time, which this list has many of.

I think that that makes sense though. It's hard to be surprised and inspired by an update of something that already exists. The best cars are ones that bring something completely new to the table. An updated version of an already existing model could do that, but it is more unlikely.

It is a pretty long list to start out with. I guess that is why they call it the "long list." I am going to be much more interested in this when they come out with the short list in the Fall.
