Bought Momma (or maybe myself) a Mystic Green SS with the sun roof yesterday.

I am going to start an on going review (or maybe just some observations) thread to explain my thoughts about the car. Some of these maybe pretty disjointed, I simply plan to list them when I notice them...

  • When you really punch it the exhaust simply roars. No other way to describe it. Sounds like some very large meat eating creature that we are all very glad has been extinct for a long time. The roar was actually startling the first time I heard it. It left a big smile on my face though...
  • The car does not have a built in garage door button. I kinda of expected it to...
  • My initial impression is that GM was not being pessimistic when they said 14 city / 21 hwy. I know I only have 30 miles on the car so far but the instant mileage reading are down right scary. (Yes I know what car I bought and I knew what to expect.) Last car I owned that got worse gas mileage was my 1979 Trans Am!
  • I went to the Aussie Commodore site last night and discovered that the SS has a 2000 kg tow capacity!?! Actually I like that, towed my Harley to Sturgis (Momma has Fibro and can't ride more than a few hours per day.) using the G8. 70 mph the whole way.
  • Putting radio channels into memory is a fiddly process on the My Link. You have to press the "button" just right or it simply goes to the channel number on the button. It did this about 2 out of 3 when I was trying to program the channels. What a pain!
  • Having GPS directions shown on the Heads Up is the best thing since booze! This is absolutely one of my favorite features.:eek:ccasion14:
  • Blue tooth linking is very simple and taking / making a call is easy stuff. Having the My Link read you your texts is good stuff too!

I'm glad to hear that you were startled by the engine firing up. That is always a good sign.

I didn't realize that there was an HUD offered on the SS. I'm gonna look up some pics of the directions being displayed through this. It sounds like a great tech.

I did not mean when firing it up (although that does sound good too!) I mean when you are cruising down the highway at 60 and then floor it. It sounds like someone ran a tank over a dinosaur's tail. At full throttle this beast roars!

Gonna need some pics!
I've been reading the owners manual and there's a lot of little things the car has that are really cool. One of my favorite non electronic things is the little grab handle on the inside of the trunk lid.
Don't wear polarized lenses when using the HUD!

This is right out of the Service Manual...
The center mufflers on vehicles fitted with the LFW engine option contains a variable exhaust valve. The purpose of the valve is to reduce exhaust noise for minimal impact on performance and back pressure. The valve consists of a spring loaded flap which is closed at lower gas flow (lower engine speed/load) forcing the exhaust gasses through a more restrictive path therefore providing improved noise performance. As gas flow increases with higher engine load/speed, the valve opens providing a less restrictive path for the exhaust gases and therefore providing good wide open throttle performance.

Even my Infiniti Q45 has this.

Chevrolet did not certify the SS for towing in the US, the car is more than capable of towing its own weight the way GMH built it. GMNA just don't want people towing with the SS

I'm sure you can get a tow hitch made up, or if your well to do you could import a GMH genuine unit from Aus, however you just need to be mindful that it may void your warranty.
I'd say it was not certified fue to added cost for federalisation.

Can anyone mention if the G8 was rated to tow in any configuration be it V6 or V8?

G8 was rated at 2000 lbs. My Toy Carrier trailer weighed 600 and my bike weighs 900 for a grand total of 1500. We had the car fully loaded for 10 days at Sturgis, I would not be surprised if we exceeded GVW.

Car handled it flawlessly.

This is the best picture I have, you can just see the back of the G8.

Got some new stuff...

First a picture of the My Link while using the nav.

Then a picture of the HUD in Nav mode...

Next, did anyone know that the SS has a built in G meter that displays on HUD? Sorry, but I couldn't take the pic while making a turn to generate some Gs.
That nav arrow is straight off the hood of my long gone and seriously missed 2nd car ... 67 Tempest custom 2 dr post ohc6 tempest automatic sea foam green.

I have a new observation,

  • Filled the tank for the first time today... Miles to Empty - 278!
Yes, I know what I bought, no I don't think this level of performance comes cheap, but it is still a shock!

So far almost all the miles have been city miles, so maybe it will pick up at least a little in the future.

My 5.3 Yukon with 26 gal tank shows about 325 doing suburban driving avg mpg 12.6 and I haven't reset it since new 11k ago!! Same as the previous 2 GMT900 Yukons I had. And we all know how fast they are(n't)....
