just tape it up so you don't scratch it.

use a no scratch interior removal tool (use good ones don't use cheap harbor freight ones they are too hard and scratch)! and just push down on each tab on the top on bottom of the vent and "pop"! they come off. remove the globe holder and you can remove it from the car.

top clip shown here:

attach the globe/bulb holder back on and pop new vent on.

a tip for turning it into BLACK CHROME

buy tinted film (kind you use to tint your headlights)
and wrap that piece. turns it into black chrome.

Quick tip on removal - fishing line.
Make a "loop" so to speak, thread it over the top of vent, then a quick pull towards you, and presto....

Alternatively, I've used PlastiDip on my G8's front gill surrounds. They're "chrome", and a quick shot of PlastiDip made them matte black. Makes the front end look so much better on my PBM car.

PlastiDip is awesome, may look at touching up a couple chromed parts on the SS, when it arrives....or I'll just leave it alone....either way.

the part is so cheap the tint or plastic dip and time will cost you more. lol! also these are PBM not just black.
