Car feels light

1233 Views 25 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  D13
Was driving on the highway today and noticed the car seemed to be "light" or loosely connected to the road. It wasn't confidence inspiring as the car felt to be moving around instead of planted. Around and above 60, the great grip and connectedness I have come to love out of the SS seamed to fade away.

Anyone experience anything like this?

Check your shocks for leaks I’d say.

Is this a strip of highway that you drive frequently?

No, it is across multiple areas. It is specifically speed related. Can change the feel by going over or under ~60.

My car had this feeling when I had 2 new tires on the rear with old tires on the front.

Also check tires pressures and alignment. Check rear shocks, as previously noted.

What tires?
What tires?
At the time I had the oem Potenzas. The rears wore out, inexplicably, so I got new ones while the fronts had about 50% tread left on them. Then I took a 700 mile trip to Sacramento and back the day after I bought them and the car was all over the road.
The SS programming on the shocks is speed-sensitive and softens as you get to highway speeds, so part of this is normal. Every now and then, my magride computer has had a gremlin and does something odd like this, but it's always returned to normal within a few days. This has happened less than 5 times in 70k+ miles, so I've just accepted it as part of her character.

I have Khumo Ectsa tires with a few miles on them. Pressures are at 36 cold for all 4.
Something is wrong with your car. There is a stretch of curvy road in the mountains where I love to get on it. When I look down at the speedometer thinking I am going 80mph and see 120mph it always impresses me.

Was it in tour mode? I really don’t enjoy my car on the highway in tour mode. It gets too “bouncy” and has been that way since new. I’m usually 100% perf mode but sometimes on highway the drone of stock exhaust in 6th gear will get to me so I’ll switch over to tour until I can’t stand the ride anymore and then switch back to perf (then back and forth for remainder of trip)

Shocks look good. Will do some testing with tour vs. sport modes.

mine is doing the same thing, the front end almost feels like I'm hydroplaning or driving on ice but the rear end feels planted. it's a very weird feel.

BINGO!
I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with the electrical power steering
Is your car stock or do you have suspension mods.?
If you have no mods, then I would inspect the steering tie rods, these.

When I installed a heavier front swaybar, it caused a little bit of oversteer ‘lightness’ In the steering wheel. Benefits outweigh the slight negative, but still.
Fully stock.

That's an interesting take. Maybe a lack of response or feel through the wheel.
