A coworker, here at Classic Chevrolet, is an avid Corvette collector and racer. He invited me and my SS to their autocross at the Mineral Wells Airport. Weather was dry and warm. My best time was a few seconds behind the Corvette times on the course. Lots of "What is it?" questions. Good times!

I am now learning more about my GoPro so I can post a video.

Sounds like fun. How long a course? A few seconds on a 60 second course is a huge difference in autox. I would expect a huge difference though as the SS is a big ol' fattie compared to a vette.

SS does look huge compared to the Vettes, definitely much taller.

My best time of day was 67 seconds. Many Vettes were in the 62-65 second range. A fully race prepped Vette did a 57 sec. run with 600hp & a set of Hoosiers.

I really miss autoxing on a big lot like that.
That lot is a former helicopter training facility from the Vietnam era. To say that it is a rough surface is an understatement. Gravel has been flying everywhere for years.

I have run there in my Z4 roadster. Very different feel in a 4000lb/415hp beast when compared to a 3000lb modded roadster.

You can't defy the laws of physics but you can have fun trying!

Reminds me of autoxing at the old Wendover location when I lived in Utah in the early 2000s. We usually had to do a little concrete patch work before running events there. Concrete is a blast though... so much grip, when it's not breaking up.

I know what you mean. I occasionally take my M Coupe for a spin and it's so much more nimble than the SS that the turn-in surprises me sometimes. Both cars handle great, but in different ways... if that makes any sense.

I didn't realize the Mineral Wells Airport you were talking about was the old Fort Wolters Base, I had it in my head their airport was southeast of town. Looks like a blast though, even if those concrete blocks are rough.
