Just a shout-out and THANKS to the OP for posting the thread. I fumbled around a bit on the airbag spring clips (finally figured it out after seeing the followup pics above and realizing the springs are over to one side to start), and thanks to the person who mentioned you have to remove the two 7mm bolts before you can pull the radio out. Other than those to issues, it went smooth!

All that's left on the interior is to get the radio converted to the Holden software (just checked and it looks like White Automotive is taking orders again, too).

Just finished up the last bits. Thanks to this thread and the OP.

OMG. It looks so much better. Better in person, it looks good in the pictures, but they don't do it justice vs. the in person view. Car should have came this way from the factory....

On the original write up there's two 7mm bolts that hold the radio in that I don't think were noted, and it wasn't necessary to rotate the steering wheel, just leave it upside down.

Like mostly everyone here on this thread I did the black trim as well and it looks great.
The only thing left to do is the AC vents on the left and right sides of the dashboard. Has anyone blacked out those AC vents yet? Are they available in black like the other dashboard trim or would I need to paint them piano black??

More Pics and Tips

I only got the trim pieces for around the touch screen and on either side of the shifter.

Looking at the trim piece for either side of the shifter, you will see how the clips are arranged. As said elsewhere in the thread, pull straight back. Here is a view of the shifter without the trim so you can see how it plugs in:

Nothing like a nice high res pick to reveal just how dirty your "clean" car is. Or how freakishly hairy your legs are.

The trim piece above the glove box is the easiest to remove and I did it without the trim removal tool:

Those 7mm bolts holding in the touch screen are here:

Do make sure that your grown child hasn't made off with your nut drivers or else you'll be cranking all day with your box wrench cause you'll only get about 1/6th of a twist out of it. And those bolts stay grabby until they are nearly fully backed out.

Have a look at the new piece and you will see where the clips are but also be aware that along the top of the touch screen there are some extra retention tabs so if you notice a bit more resistance than you might expect along the top, it is them:

And for those of us that don't find themselves regularly digging into their cars that often, here are the wiring connectors that get unplugged. Each has a release lever to depress on the top center nearest to where the wires enter the connector. Press and pull. If you have pressed it enough, the connector offers almost no resistance to be removed. They plug back in with a positive click.

The 2 "hidden" screws that have been mentioned earlier that need to be removed can be difficult to see. In this pic, my screw driver is right on one of them so you can see where it is and which is the correct one:

...and once you put it all back in:

I recently saw this picture in one of the SS groups I'm in, he was showing his custom cup he had made but in the background you'll see the OEM steering wheel with matching black trim replacing the top and bottom leather prices, anyone know how or who could do this, personally I think it looks great and I'm very interested in getting it done.

Just finished my interior black trim install. Shout-out to bonecrrusher and several other members that offered additional details for this install.

Please post up if you ever find out.

Just did mine using the tips in this thread. You don't have to unplug the airbag to remove the wheel piece, you can just hang it there for a sec and pop off the trim, its really easy.

Actually, all of this install was rather easy, as long as you have the torx bit of course. I had plenty experience doing interior bits with my BRZ, and I would say these were even easier due to less flimsy plastic.

I had this dash trim sitting around for nearly a year - so busy traveling and such I couldn't find a free Saturday to do the install. (Plus I have an unnatural fear of dying in a freak airbag incident, which fueled my procrastination). Finally took the car in for one of the free oil changes a couple of weeks ago and asked the dealer about the install. $115.00? DO IT!

AMAZING DIFFERENCE!! Should have done it a year ago! This trim looks fantastic and dramatically improves the interior look of the car. IMO this is how the car should have come from the factory. I'd recommend this upgrade to everyone.

Seriously, car looks $10,000 better!! Huge improvement.

Are those factory parts???
Yes and no. They are from a previous model (VE / G8) but VF1 & 2 (SS) and HSV only came in the greyish / beige and the black onyx trim is what my new SSVR's been missing.
I sourced the parts through eBay and the vehicle dismantlers (some new). I even picked up a set of fabric covered illuminated mirrored visors to match. The only part that isn't available in onyx, as its different in this model, is the A pillar trim, so I bought a second hand pair and my local motor trimer matched the colour on the speaker grill and vent and covered the plastic in identical fabric to the roof lining, minus the bulky foam backing. IMO it looks the way it should have and I'm extremely happy with the results.
My next project is the gaudy silver dash trim which I now know this thread was referring to.

Happy Days.......

in looking at our Kraut-burning Passat interior with all black aesthetics; this option is really appealing to me for the SS. Are there any variations on this aftermarket trim, say in a black satin, or leather-like finish rather than just the gloss black?

(edit) Nevermind...just went to the website, gloss only. That's ok...some proper paint would fix that...or a wrap of the aftermarket parts.

Boom!
No, don't do this--if you're going to do it, disconnect battery, then wait a few minutes and disconnect the airbag. You don't want it to go off hanging there by accident and two, you don't want to chance breaking the wires while its hanging there. Its really easy to disconnect and reconnect.

Doing an install of black interior trim. Can’t seem to loosen air bag. How much force is required to move rods located in back of steering wheel? Do they move to the outside or toward the center of the steering wheel? Thanks.

Towards the center, angle the screw driver to the outside of the wire then push towards the center of the car.

I got mine finished today at the dealer. Like some others I’ve had the radio and transmission trim for at least a year. Got my 15k oil change today (and did the 6mt and rear diff service - spendy). I did the airbag and steering wheel trim last year. Dealer completed the look with the center stack parts today for $110.

As others have said, transforms the interior. I love the look.

I just completed the exterior (minus window and door handle trim) and interior blackout today myself. Overall it was fairly straight forward, just know that if you have a 16-17, there are a LOT more fasteners than are in the instructions.

Also, I decided to keep the factory brushed aluminum piece on the steering wheel. I dunno, the piano black on the radio surround and shifter side panels looks so perfect but that shiny ass piece of black plastic on a matte steering wheels just doesnt work for me. Plus, the shifter, pedals, and steering wheel (all the driver interfaces) have brushed accents so I just decided to leave it and Im pretty happy with it. Its a bit dark now but here she is.
