Big brother is watching but private industry and citizens seems to be watching even more than Big Bro!

This thread is to discuss tinfoil hat stuff, reasons *why* folks want to disable onstar or other tracking technologies like google.

Personally i don't mind the google tracking stuff and enable all of it, basically to test it.
I'm way into it, as one of the creators of the internet.

One question i have for onstar-disablers is:
"which steps if any have you taken to minimize tracking-via-cellphone/celltowers/wifi-connections, or do you even own/carry a cellphone?"

Personally I use open wifi *always* and sort of want to get hacked via a spoofed man-in-the-middle wifi: "Make my day". I won't pay for a data plan, I prefer $12/month unlimited voice and text. (it's $15 for new customers, republic wireless).

For years I've told all my friends to forward me *every* computer virus or suspicous email they get. I want to know about all the possible scams. When my friends do get their identity stolen, I can help determine exactly how it happened. One of my buds got his identity stolen via the 'obituary scan' approach, a very effective approach for the criminals. Never allow too much detail in obituaries about the family of the deceased. Obfuscate all the info about all the deceased relatives - do not list home towns or regions whatsoever. Do not list full/middle names. google can give you more advice about that if you have the sad task of approving or writing an obituary.

Have any of your friends/fam/relatives fallen victim to the "we are calling from microsoft tech support, your computer has a virus, please surf to this web site", and then they have to pay a ransom to get their computer back either by paying scammers $500 for a "security audit/program" or similar horse-pucky ? Anyone you know got caught by encryption-ransomware like a bunch of the local police departments?

I find facebook a LOT more annoying than google and have thought of signing off facebook - not because of their 'are your friends nearby' or other geo-tracking, but because of all their other crapola with ads and so many people wasting so much time sharing/liking/self-aggrandizing.

Seems to me that ubiquitous private-citizen/private-industry cellphone cameras and video-cameras are the most insidious tracking devices, for better or for worse. Apparently one protection against that is wearing a mask like it's the old west. Or wearing an 'anonymous' mask. Wearing a mask is very popular among top looters and the many pretend-protesters who are actually thug criminal rioters! It's all the rage!

Let's discuss.
ps - probably nobody here hates Snowden more than me. I hope he returns to USA to own up and face trial and life imprisonment. Most of the very-many successful attacks in USA that have occurred after 9/11 would not have been successful had it not been for the Snowden treason.

I don't think there is anything you can do to stop this train. Big data is worth a lot, tech is going to change just about everything. It's just a matter of time that technology allows all interested parties (govt, and priv companies) to do what they need to with data generated by tech. Eventually, it may lead to a more controlled and monitored society. With less crime, but also with less freedom to do "stupid stuff".

There are many many things you can do to reduce, stop or fake tracking information from your smart phone, PC etc.

I think this is a subject for another forum though.
Good point as to what people can do to prevent tracking, etc. I think this topic is fine given it's in the off topic section. It may lead to a lot of spirited conversations though! :devil

if you've got suggestions for other forums where this sort of tracking paranoia, techniques, scams are discussed, i am interested in a pointer. reddit seems pretty good for that stuff. alternatively, if it's about the internet & scams & spoofs & possibilities, just ask me - i did actually/seriously create the internet, along with a few hundred other engineers. I started obsessing/thinking about how to provide computer access to everyone on the planet as soon as I got my first full-time programming job in high school in 1977 for $2.10.
I have made it my career/life goal ever since and seem to have succeeded to some extent.

Btw, Al Gore was there when we created the internet. I know because it sort of annoyed me whenever his VP motorcade vehicles were blocking my favorite/prime parking spots - this happened on a regular basis at the company that created most of the internet back in early 1990s and still provides much of it. Gore visited us many times and gave us super-encouraging rah-rah speeches. He was truly the ONLY politician at the time who understood the internet. Gore's statement was accurate when he said "As far as the US congress is concerned, I invented the internet." I'm no democrat/Marxist but credit where due:
Al Gore was there, understood exactly what the internet was and how it would change the world.
He was super encouraging to us engineers/etc who made the internet.

I want to give any qualified engineer on the planet the ability to *take my job* if they are better at it than me, or will do it for less $ in a democratic country.
It seems to have worked - I've been laid off twice due to my job being outsourced to India, and it might happen again any time. So far, I've given glowing linkedIN recommendations to the engineers in India who so effectively "took" my jobs after I trained them, resulting in me getting layoff.

As for the road lighting and monitoring, that sounds reasonable/expected and *redundant* given what is already deployed in much of USA: Big bro already has the ability to track any vehicle in/around major USA cities, including most/all of the northeast & east coast.
And it doesn't matter whether there is a license plate on the vehicle or not.
The technology for this stuff was first developed and deployed by USA for/in Baghdad in the 1990s.
In the last few years it has been deployed across most of the USA Northeast & east-coast, and announced publically via barely-obfuscated announcements & media reports.

Probably with this, like most things, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Don't make yourself an easy target, but don't go crazy with paranoia.

Like with internet usage. Don't click on emails you don't recognize. Don't send your personal information to anyone you don't know or YOU didn't initiate the conversation. Protect your passwords. Review your credit report. Update your virus protection.

But the only way to NOT get tracked on the internet is to not use the internet.

It's not much different than how you SHOULD protect your house. Don't make yourself an easy target, but you don't need a moat, barbed wire, laser turrets, etc.

I am a bit curious about the rationale behind unpugging OnStar. As far as data intrusion and monitoring go, it sounds scarier than it really is.

COULD the government track you through OnStar? Yes. Just as easily as they could through your cell phone? Do they track you through OnStar? Nope.

Don't kid yourself, your SS whereabouts is constantly logged via OnStar whether you are paying for the service or not. The same can be said for a number of other data points OnStar is able to collect from your vehicle.

How many of you have had this happen to you? The other day I was driving along when out of the blue OnStar comes on over the speakers and says, "Onstar status check.... click!" Say wha....? This was the 2nd time I've heard that message and I haven't had OnStar services since the initial time period lapsed back around July of 2014.

Now, the government may or may not be actively tracking you, but they have the ability to retrace your steps with ease should they want to. They can shut off your vehicle at any time should they want to. AND, they can listen to anything said in your vehicle at any time, should they WANT TO!

I'm not a paranoid person, but don't ever kid yourself, with the technical advancements now placed in our cars and knowing the mindset of people having the power to abuse these advancements, the inside of your car is no longer considered a private place. Instead, your car is now viewed as an instrument for use of a public resource and therefore open to public scrutiny.

But then, it isn't something to worry about, so don't let it distract you while you're driving.

Seems appropriate to resurrect this one, based on this post from earlier this morning!!! I just don't know how long this one will stay up and available!!!

I will likely acquire a copy of this latest literary publication!!! No matter your particular opinion of his actions,,,, his observations are astute and well informed,,, in other words,,,,, "PRICELESS"!!

I can't imagine, and I am not going to view this page with all the ads and their tracking.

my browser runs Ad-guard, Disconnect, and Privacy Badger which together do a good job of blocking many of the sites cb750 listed...and for this post, intentionally left out periods, added commas, and exclamation points!!! purists will note my use of the harvard comma and lack of capitalization...

IMO all it takes to stay safe is`common sense. But as some of us know`not all of us have it. I get an average of 4 cell calls a week from shitheads trying to get my CC numbers. It is fun screwing with them but it does infuriate me to know that lots of elderly probably fall for there crap.

As far as PCs, at least Windows warns you now of impending stupidity on your part.

As for OnStar, as`long as they don't tell my insurance company what happens with my SS I'm good. ;)

I know that some of my information got leaked out by a service that I paid for to protect my data.

So the way I see it is that some of the services that people are flocking too (mentioned in above posts) to protect their privacy are just services that haven't been hacked yet.

The plague was worst in the fortified cities. Not saying you shouldn't live there, but I'd also be wary of how many fortified cities you visit.

Every time I hear a LifeLock commercial, that's what I think. I also try to limit my exposure to Google & Amazon too. No Facebook or Apple to worry about at least.

I've cut back on online banking as well and have gone back to checks for most bills since they're safer. I'm increasingly paying cash in stores instead of using my cards for the same reason. There's a certain amount of irony there.

AND yet another example of the encroachment of "Big Brother" and the attendant consequences of this data being available!!! Remember,,, if your data is domiciled in a "Cloud",,,, IT DOESN'T BELONG TO YOU ANYMORE!!! PERIOD!!!

Furthermore, the article makes no mention of the fact that secret FISA Warrants, have and will continue to be, executed without any notification to the subjects of that action!!!

Scary times indeed!!!
