Battery Replacement/Upgrade ?

1962 Views 24 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  whiteboyslo
Guys,

Still using the original battery on my 2015 SS and was curious if I should upgrade the battery and to what and any particular brands? Thought I read somewhere that new batteries for our cars has to be fully charged before installing and hopefully the source that sells them does that.

Thanks,
Wig

Best advice if your SS is not a daily, keep the battery (whichever one you choose) on a proper maintainer as much as possible. My 2015 era OE battery (in my early production 2016 SS) is still going strong, in Colorado no less. It does hibernate in the winter and is not a daily driver, so that certainly is a big factor.

If you go AGM, you need a maintainer that is spec’d for AGM batteries.

Also use transport mode when car sits idle for more than a week. Shuts off everything after 24hours. The remote will not unlock the doors, only way to unlock the car is with the key. Since I use transport mode regularly, have never needed to charge the battery.

Right you are. I was going to buy that Optima yellow top for my SS and I bought the Optima charger to keep it maintained, but then I sold my SS. So I use the charger to maintain the AGM battery in my Cadillac that doesn't get driven that much sometimes.
Oh good thread guys thanks, I’ll refer back when my 2015 unit finally gives up the ghost. It’s a little slow cranking now, and the backup camera stays on sometimes, so it’s getting closer to its Final Discharge.
My original battery lasted 5 years in NW Oregon, so I decided to go with a direct replacement for $185, amazon prime.
Just replaced OEM on my 2015 over the weekend. Noticed the car seemed to struggle to cold start a few months ago, but usually after its weekly drive, it'd be ok for hot starts. Went to leave the grocery store, and I thought I'd be jumping it or calling AAA because it was so bad. Threw in a Costco/Interstate H7 AGM and it's almost embarrassing how fast it cranks now. Huge difference, so I'm sorry I put it off for so long.
