I see you guys will have your own no-speed-limit highway. Looks like you might have to travel a day to get there though.
"The Northern Territory government has announced a trial return to open speed limits on a 200 km (124 mile) section of the Stuart Highway between Barrow Creek and Alice Springs, from February 1, 2014."

I am guessing that this highway is in the middle of no where. Most things are in the middle of no where in Australia. Pretty sure there is basically nothing in the Northern Territory. But its cool to have the ability to take a drive out there and go as fast as you'd like. Lucky Aussies.

Someone no doubt will bring back a "Gumball" rally type of event.
Years ago a Ferrari F40 crashed in a tarmac rally that killed I think from memory both
of the Japanese drivers & an official on the side of the road which made the NT Government reduce the speed limits.....

Gumball events happen every year, just a matter of knowing it's route since it happens in just about anywhere in the world. Would be sweet to see an SS take part in the challenge.

I once drove approx 300 miles from Alice Springs to Uluru (the big rock). Never have I been so enthralled by so much nothing. I was by myself in a Falcon rental car and there was no speed limit, and no trees to hit. Some sections of the road weren't paved and the soil was the richest red you could imagine. It proved to be the perfect surface for drifting fun.
I don't think I saw another car for the whole trip so when speed limits were introduced I considered it bureaucratic meddling gone too far. Very nice to see them come back to their senses. I often think of that drive.

When I worked for air inter building commodore air con systems all the manufactures would test their cars for heat durability from Alice springs to Catherine in summer 45~50 deg C at 160 km/h till the crash ended to open limit, the odd thing is the death toll doubled after the reduced speed was introduced,
Having been their in January it takes ***** of steel to drive fast at night and a death wish, it is all open country with roaming camels, bulls & roos all capable of wreaking a car.
People their drive to the conditions, not to a set limit, and at night they slow down,
If you see an oncoming road train (truck with 4 trailers) you pull off the road and let him stay on the road or take a rock shower, so not quite an autobahn.
With no help if something goes wrong most only go fast where they can safely.
