That's an excellent point.

What's the legal standard? Is it a CARB certificate? Or is any tune that passes the smog test valid? This is new territory for me and I chose Magnuson because they claimed CARB.

Now I need to learn what to ask for.

I believe CARB is basically a number/code sticker etc.(that is given to the manufacturer by the state)that the smog shop looks for at the time of the smog, if they see something not OEM. I have two other LS vehicles that are tuned, and they pass, no problem.

Why would the CARB tune be critical? A regular tuned car will pass smog.

That's what I was thinking. As long as you've got that EO sticker, how would they even know. Do they actually read a checksum for the tune or something? Do we have any Cali smog techs on the forum who might know for sure? I do know that every vehicle built in the last 10-12 years that I've had smog tested were only hooked up to the OBD port and given a visual; never any actual tailpipe or dyno tests.

Someone correct me if Im wrong but you should receive a sticker with the CARB EO number when you purchase the kit. Just stick that under the hood. When you take it for smog they will see that you have a CARB EO so they shouldnt question it. Whether you are running the CARB legal tune or a custom tune, I doubt they would know as long as you are not throwing error codes.

Sucks you are running into these issues and without your car a period of time. I plan on getting the Maggie Heartbeat too since I am in Cali. I actually spoke to a shop thats near Magnuson (this shop has done a few SS and was recommended by others here) and they told me the issues you are having have been fixed. But apparently they have not.

When I get mines I plan on getting a custom tune so I wont have these drivability issues. I would lose their warranty but I guess thats the price for playing the game. The kit comes with 6lbs of boost. Im sure you would be fine as long as you have a good tuner.

I plan on just running the stock kit with stock exhaust to stay lega in CA. I just want a litte more fun for my daily driver. I dont plan on going to the track or races with it.

Based on PDF from the Magnuson website regarding product eligibility for the limited powertrain warranty the SS doesn't qualify and get a warranty anyway. Unless there's something I'm missing...

You could call your magnuson dealer and clarify, but I believe that listing is for the tuner kit that comes without the CARB EO tune. That's all they sold before the CARB EO was granted. As such, custom tuning was required and there was no powertrain warranty, just the parts warranty if you had it installed by a dealer, ASE mechanic at a shop, etc. If you meet all the conditions, and use the CARB tune on another otherwise unmodified vehicle, installed by dealer at a shop, etc, then the 3 year powertrain warranty applies.

As for california not detecting the tune, they won't currently as california is still working on implementing that check. They have been working to incorporate CALID and CVN in the SMOG check for several years. The CALIDs and CVNs of CARB EO tunes are already databased for use at a future date.

Thanks! Not really an issue for me as their tune won't work for what I'm doing but I found it interesting and wanted to see. That was the only SS line in the PDF that's supposedly updated in 2018.

Wow did not know that. Good info to have for us Cali folks.

Now over a month and no resolution in sight. ...

This is most disturbing. Can you elaborate more specifically what are the symptoms you experience with their CARB tune ? You said it's running rough, but is that just at idle, on tip in, on decel, all the above, etc. ????

Also, you mentioned they originally had trouble flashing the pcm, has it been confirmed by MAG that the tune was indeed loaded successfully?

All excellent questions. What I know is my shop reports driveability problems - but I don't know specifically where.

They also reported flash problems and sent the PCM to MAG. So I assume the flash was successful.

They're coordinating sending my car to MAG for resolution, but no commitment to a schedule. My shop reports they've done over 50 SC kit installs and have never had these problems before. I'd just like MAG to respond directly with a resolution plan and schedule.

Right now I would not recommend this kit.

Any update on your dilemma? I was thinking that as the purchaser of their supercharger (whether through your shop or another authorized dealer) you have every right to call and talk to Magnuson customer service yourself. Perhaps get an update or find out if they even know what is happening with your car. It would be nice to rely on the shop to handle everything but nowadays that type of service is hard to come by.

Thanks for the feedback by the way. It sucks to have to go through all that but hopefully this info can help others in the future. Good luck.

Good news: install is finished and I picked up car today. My shop doesn't have a dyno. Feels stronger above 2500 RPM. Minor drivability hiccup when I drop the throttle in stop-and-go traffic. Step on the clutch to avoid a jerk.

My M6 may be the first one Magnuson has done with the multi-mode exhaust and a CARB tune. Magnuson flew a tech to my shop to inspect and resolve. I'm not 100% sure if there was an ECU flash problem (because they reflashed again). There may have been some other tweaks to support the exhaust modes with the manual.

Will report back after I drive on it for a few days.

They cannot alter any programming/hardware or they would have to re-test for the CARB EO. One of the reasons that vendors really hate CARB is if they find an error or improvement to make, its extremely costly and time consuming to do so. Other vendors in the space have told me at least $50,000 and several months of paperwork. Glad they were able to fix whatever was wrong within the constraints.

That's great . . . now slap that carb sticker on there and then go get a proper tune to run for the next 5 years or so. Only you and your hairdresser will know for sure. :wink

Magnuson Heartbeat Decision

I have a 2015 SS with a manual transmission and am thinking about installing a Magnuson Heartbeat SC in it. However, before I make a decision I'd like to see an SS with the same SC already installed. I live in SoCal near Glendale and have lined up an installer in North Hollywood. While he's installed SCs in three SS cars, none were Magnusons so he can't refer me to a satisfied customer. I plan to call Magnuson and get the names of other local installers and will try to find a customer that way, but I thought I would try this forum.

Is anyone out there who would met me so I can see your car? Please let me know.

Thanks!
Did you ever get the Maggie? I’m in North Hills. We can meet up if you still have the SS

TRYING TO FIND THE BELT PART NUMBER, TENSIONER AND IDLER PART NUMBER FOR THE HEARTBEAT KIT

ALSO, DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF THE HEARTBEAT KIT USES THE OEM AIR INTAKE.

REASON I AM ASKING, I BOUGHT ONE ALREADY BUILT, AND THE AIR INTAKE IS A BIT FINICKY ON THIS THING, AND IT IS CERTAINLY NOT A GOOD FITMENT OR FILTER (SPECTRE) BRAND. DEFINATELY NEED TO CHANGE THIS UP ASAP, BUT I CANNOT FIND ANY DOCUMENTATION. IF I NEED TO BUY AN INTAKE I WILL, BUT NEED TO KNOW IF AN AFTERMARKET INTAKE FOR THE CAR WILL ACTUALLY FIT, AND ALSO NEED TO CHANGE THE PULLEYS, AS THEY ARE WOBBLING QUITE A BIT, AND THE IDLER HAS A DING IN IT MAKING IT OFF BALANCE.

Belt is a 6PK2300

Tensioner is the OEM relocated - original GM part

Not sure on the Idler pulley; there is no part numbers listed in the manual. If you contact Magnuson directly, they may refer you to Superchargersonline.com .. they won't have it listed on the website but may be able to help if you call.

The kit uses the factory airbox / filter setup and a supplied intake elbow. There are aftermarket intakes that work if you search the forums; I couldn't help you in that department.
